- The Silk Road Ensemble - Live in Concert
Ustad Shujaat Khan stands at the head of a long line of master musicians and is today's leading proponent of the Imdadkhani gharana (tradition) of sitar playing. Seventh in a continuous thread of distinguished instrumentalists, Ustad Shujaat Khan's legacy includes many of the most venerable figures in Indian classical music: great-great grandfather Ustad Sahabdad Khan, great-grandfather Imdad Khan, grandfather Inayat Khan, and father Vilayat Khan. From Ustad Sahabdad Khan's important addition of the tarab (sympathetic strings) to the sitar, to Vilayat Khan's development of the gayaki ang (vocal playing style) and brilliant melding of technical, melodic, compositional, improvisational, and rhythmic artistry, Ustad Shujaat Khan's family legacy is undeniably impressive.
In line with the ancient concept of khandan, whereby a father's status is passed down to the first born male, Ustad Shujaat Khan was groomed for success by his father and guru, Vilayat Khan. At the age of three, Ustad Shujaat Khan began playing on a custom made mini-sitar under the expert tutelage of his father. By the age of six the child prodigy was giving highly successful public concerts. Since that time, Ustad Shujaat Khan has gone on to perform in the world's most important venues, Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall among them. In accordance with the Imdadkhani Gharana founded by his great-grandfather and the gayaki ang innovated by his father, Ustad Shujaat Khan is celebrated for his elegant use of meend (glissando), lyrical sensibility, mastery of technique, and euphonious tone. Ustad Shujaat Khan was a visiting professor in the Ethnomusicology Department at UCLA. ~ John Vallier, Rovi

Directed by Havana-born pianist Aida Diestro (1928-1973), Cuarteto d'Aida was one of Cuba's most successful singing groups of the 1950s and'60s. Originally featuring vocalists Omara and Haydee Portuondo, Elena Burke and Moraima Secada, Cuarteto d'Aida brought a new sensibility to Cuba's pop music with their sophisticated vocals and swing arrangements.
The popularity of Cuarteto d'Aida lifted the four women to international fame. They performed their songs for enthusiastic audiences in South and North America and Europe and recorded with influential Afro-Cuban trumpet player Arturo "Chico" O'Farrill. Burke, Secada and the Portuondo sisters rose from extremely impoverished backgrounds. When they made their first appearances on Cuban television, they wore homemade clothes.
The senior member, Burke (February 1928 – August 18, 2002) (real name: Roman Burques) had the most previous experience as a performer. Having made her debut, on Havana radio station, CMQ, in 1941, she became a professional actress, a year later, and appeared regularly on the radio and in cabarets.
Cuarteto d'Aida remained together until the early-1970s. As members left to pursue solo careers, Diestro enlisted highly talented women singers to replace them. Even the death of Diestro in 1973 failed to put an end to Cuarteto d'Aida. The group continues to be active today.
The original quartet recorded their sole album in 1957. Although Haydee Portuondo left music and settled in the United States, her sister, Omara, continues to be heralded as the "first lady of Cuban music."

Syriana - Ten Days in Bilad Al Sham, Society of Sound Music
Much more than an 'East meets West' musical fusion project, Syriana are three friends who came together in creative protest pre-President Obama.
Nick Page (Real World regular, Trans Global Underground member and Dub Colossus mastermind), Abdullah Chhadeh (Syrian qanun virtuoso and musical innovator) and Irish born Bernard O'Neill (another Real World regular and in demand musician) are the three distinctive artists behind Syriana.
"We thought a new Cold War was being foisted upon the world," says Page, "the Cold War and its iconography had divided East and West. We wanted to bridge it."
Recorded at Chaddeh's London base in Walthamstow and at Real World Studios in Box, the music was already a genre-defying mixture of Americana via Dick Dale and the traditional sonorous sound of the ancient 81 srting Arabic dulcimer, the qanun, but it was a 10 trip to Damascus that sealed its unique sound.

HEREПереслать - Ravi Shankar - Concert For Peace: Royal Albert Hall
This is a live recording of a concert given by Ravi Shankar in 1993 and released to commemorate his 75th birthday a year and a half later. He is accompanied on tabla by virtuoso Zakir Hussain and on sarod by his own student (and virtuoso in his own right), Partha Sarathy. He begins the evening with his own interpretation of a rare raga, that of jait. He chose the version played here after researching a few possible forms of the raga that have appeared over the centuries (families, essentially, of ragas). After exploring the grounds of jait thoroughly, he moves on to kirwani, a raga adapted by Shankar from the Carnatic system. He draws out a mood of romanticism, eroticism, and happiness mainly, his preferred method of dealing with some of the madhur ragas. On the second disc, he continues on, performing "Raga Mishra Khamaj," an evening raga. He takes this one in the direction of thumri (light classical entertainment music, usually vocal) stylings. This final raga also features worthwhile solos from both Hussain and Sarathy. While the recording quality might not be as good as one might hope in some respects, this is a live recording on a minor label and is understandably at a lower level of engineering, perhaps. The music is nonetheless performed to perfection, as is always the case with Shankar. Some of the heat from his earlier playing days is perhaps missing from this album (along with other, newer albums), but Shankar can still perform at a higher level than 99-percent of the other players on the scene without breaking a sweat. For any fan of Shankar, this is probably already in their collection. For those looking to break into Indian classical music, other records from earlier in Shankar's career might make better starting points. For those who already know the music but don't have this album, give it a shot -- you might be surprised by his continued ability. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide
