  • Russudan Meipariani - Lieder aus einer Insel
    Russudan Meipariani
    Lieder aus einer Insel, 2007
In her music, Russudan Meipariani interweaves the sounds of her Georgian home with New Music and Scandinavian tones. This debut album, "Lieder aus einer Insel", documents the inner process of finding herself between emotional and real worlds. The onomatopoeic nature of the songs is magically expressive.

After studying in Germany with Wolfgang Rihm, she spent two exchange semesters at the Conservatory in Oslo and studied for one year with Lasse Thoresen. This stay in Norway was a great inspiration to her; having not done so for a long time, she started to sing again and began to develop her very own onomatopoeic song. On her return to Germany, she continued to concentrate on her voice and composed the "Lieder aus einer Insel" cycle.

- Stefan Franzen

  • Abdel Halim Hafez - Al Jawab
Halim was known for his passion when singing, and his highly unique powerful wonderful voice, (earning the name, "the nightingale"). His performances on stages were one of a kind, Halim did performances in almost every country in the eastern world and he had numerous concerts outside of Egypt, and the Arab World (Paris, London), at a time where only few could become that big. He was at a point overshadowed by the great Umm Kulthum, but managed by his way of singing, and with his more modern and ahead of his time songs to surpass her, and become more popular than her. He is best known for putting his heart and soul in all of his songs, and was never shy of showing his emotions in singing.

  • Zakir Hussain - Drums of India - Tabla
    THE DRUMS OF INDIA
The rolling thunderous cadences of drumming are the most ancient, universally beloved joy of music known to man. In India alone, has drumming developed into a fine art form, abeautiful language of expressive syllables from the delicate to the explosive. A stupendous mathematical art of juggling kaleidoscopic patterns with the ring of the 'tala' cycle. HMV brings this superlative series as a tribute to a unique international art form.

    ZAKIR HUSSAIN
The uniqueness of Zakir Hussain lies in the fact that the tabla is veritably an extension of his being - an effervescent, sensual, flighty and eloquent being at that. Zakir Hussain's tabla speaks, cajoles, seduces and ultimately mesmerises. The utter brilliant of his mathematical abilities, the superfine clarity of his sound production and the lightning speed of his fingers finally seem to get lost in the effect of his unique expressiveness. Combined with his stunning stage presence and charisma, Zakir Hussain's artistry has made him one of the India's most powerful contemporary cultural ambassadors.

    TABLA
The tabla grew with the development of'Khyal' in vocal music and 'Kathak' in dance, gradually overshadowing its precursor of the traditional pakhawaj, which is co-eval with the esoteric Dhrupad system. This two part drum is comprised by the right hand tabla and the left hand 'bayan' or 'dagga'.
The slimmer tabla with its tunable sharp lyrical sounds is the main orator with the base support provided by the sounds on the 'bayan'. The sounds are lighter, sharper and allow for more lyrical expression.

  • USTAD NUSRAT FATEH ALI KHAN & USTAD SULTAN KHAN - Pukaar: Echo
It seems nothing is impossible in this technologically advanced world. And the music world is no exception. Technology has brought Ustad Sultan Khan's dream of singing together with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan alive. Ustad Sultan Khan singing together with the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan? A mere pipe dream? No way. And the proof is Pukaar, the new album which uses ground breaking technology to bring together two of the world's greatest musicians. It was Ustad Sultan Khan's (a renowned exponent of the Sarangi) lifelong dream to sing and play his instrument along with Nusrat, one of the leading singers of Sufi music. They even met a couple of times when Nusrat was alive but were not destined to perform onstage together. Sultan was a great fan of Nusrat's singing, while Nusrat reciprocated that by attending many of Sultan's concerts. Sadly, Nusrat passed away in 1997 and it seemed like Sultan's dream had collapsed. Thanks to technology, it has been realized. Before recording for this one-of-a-kind album, Sultan Khan listened to the recordings of the great Sufi master and felt that he could play the Sarangi and sing with the maestro. However, he was still hesitant to undertake such a venture since it could appear that he was trying to spoil the original version. Many renowned musicians encouraged Sultan to take up the project. Thus, Pukaar (The Call) was born. Pukaar is indeed a different project – the cover of the album describes it as separated by time, space, life and death. Previously, there have been remixes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's songs, but only Pukaar features a classical instrument and a voice with Nusrat's Qawwali. Qawwali, which literally means 'utterance' in Arabic, was the music of the Muslim mystics, known as the Sufis. Sultan Khan has added a number of verses together with the Sarangi, giving Pukaar special Bhakti touch. During the medieval period, the Bhakti Movement in Hindi poetry originated as a protest against religion, which stressed only upon the scriptures. Both the Sufi and Bhakti movements shared common features including that of a loving and benevolent God rather than a cruel one. It is noteworthy that while Bhakti Bhajans sing the praise of the Sufis, many Qawwali sing about the love of Lord Krishna and Radha. The 19th century saw the Sarangi replaced by the Harmonium, which did not require frequent retuning like the former. Since this process continued into the 20th century, the Sarangi almost disappeared. Thankfully, the latter half of the 20th century saw the revival of the unique music instrument. Sound engineers in London and Mumbai have made sure that the original rendering of Nusrat is not lost. On the contrary, Sultan's Sarangi matches the beauty of Qawwali in an awesome manner. One may even feel that both men sat together and sang this composition. Sultan Khan has added verses and improvised Nusrat's traditional lines from poets like Khusrau. The magicians (recording engineers) of this album are Kulhit Bhamra, Salim and Suleiman Merchant. In conclusion, Sultan opines that he has tried not to upstage Nusrat in any way. It is more of raga rang (exploring a raga) rather than raga jung (ragas battling each other). More importantly, it is the realization of his personal dream. On both counts, Pukaar is a great success. • Sima Bina - Sounds from the Plain (Avaye Sahra)
The career of Iranian songstress Sima Bina can be divided into two distinct phrases: a child prodigy who hosted her own radio show, Golhayeh Sahraie (Wild Flowers), and a teenager who initially focused on the classical music tradition of her homeland. Forced from the stage by the political crisis that struck Iran in 1979 and the enactment of a law prohibiting women from singing, Bina became a collector of Khorassan and Persian folk songs and began composing her own songs with poet Mohammed Ebrahim Djafari and dotar player Hamid Khezri. Despite her shift in repertoire, Bina continues to project enthusiasm and warmth with her highly emotional vocals. Rootsworld called Bina "a singer of strength and beauty, a trained classical singer who can keep it clean and reach for emotional highs in the simplest of phrases."

The daughter of Ahmad Bina, an Iranian classical music composer and poet, Bina began her career at the age of nine when she joined the cast of a children's program on radio Iran. Although she maintained her involvement with radio until 1979, Bina found time to study classical music with Ma'aroufi and Zarinpanjeh and to attend Teheran University. After graduating with a degree in fine arts in 1969, she continued her musical studies with Davani. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi

  • Kasse Mady - Manden Djeli Kan
Best known for his work with Toumani Diabaté's Symmetric Orchestra, Kassé Mady ranks alongside Salif Keita as one of the great veteran male voices of Mali. He's a griot, descended from a long line of traditional musicians, and there's a confidence and sense of authority to his powerful singing, which can ease between the conversational and declamatory. Most of his songs are self-written and medium paced, with variety provided by his impressive backing musicians, including members of the Symmetric Orchestra. Toumani Diabaté makes an appearance playing kora on the exquisite and passionate Nankoumandjian, while the Symmetric's Fantamady Kouyaté provides some impressive guitar work, swapping fluid guitar lines with the former Rail Band star Djelimady Tounkara on the rolling Maliba. It's a classy set - and would have been even better if it had included the ngoni hero Bassekou Kouyaté, who provided the memorable backing for Kassé Mady at his London concert this week.

The mightiest male voice in Mali with his best release for years!
Kasse's voice is warm, rich and deeply textured. He can make someone like Salif Keita seem brash and unsubtle - and I'm saying that as someone who really loves Salif Keita.
Kasse Mady seems unrecognised outside of west africa and deserves so much more attention, especially for this stunning CD.
Mainly acoustic instruments create the sound - guitar, balafon, djembe and wonderful backing singers whose sweet voices complement the huge warm voice of Kasse Mady as his notes soar above the music for days.
There are millions of Mali's best musicians appearing. Toumani Diabate on kora, the Rail Band's Djely Mady Tounkara, Moriba Koita on n'goni, Ousmane Kouyate, Djely Moussa Kouyate, Baba Sissoko and the backing singers; Mamani Keita, Diaou Kouyate, Ma Demba.

    Stand out tracks:
Kaninba - brilliant guitar lines weave around the kora, the vocal is clear, crisp and catchy, the percussion has an uplifting hit.

Kia Ko Djougou - flute and buzzing camele n'goni bass, sweet backing vocals, djembe and tama punching out an insistent beat.

Maliba - twisting electric guitar lines, sweet voices in a catchy chorus and the huge honeyed rich vocals of Kasse Mady.

Nankoumandjian - two koras (Toumani Diabate and Madou Diabate), balafon and bolon.

Sublime, seductive, warm and complex music...

  • Kassé Mady Diabaté - Kassi Kasse
One of the most sensational voices in Mali's Manding griot tradition, Kasse Mady is best known internationally for his work with Taj Mahal.
Kasse Mady Diabate was born in Kéla, Mali, in 1949. The Diabatés are one of the two biggest griots families. Their ancestor, Morykaba Diabaté, fought with Soundjata in the 13th century.

Kela is the capital of the griots, the Mecca of musical tradition. All of his cousins, brothers, sisters, know how to sing without micro before thousands of people, but Kassé Mady is different because of his sweet voice. He owes his fame in Mali to this gentle, though powerful voice.

At 20, he was already famous in Kangaba, the old Mandingo capital. Demba Diallo, the governor of the Kangaba district formed an orchestra and asked him to join it as a singer. For the first time, Kassé Mady experienced electric music. Within a few years he has become the premiere Malinke singer (dominant ethnic group in Mandingo country).
His fame reached Bamako, and in 1972 theYouth Ministry named him as singer in the Badema National Orchestra. Until 1988, Kasse Mady led a double carrier of griot for men in high places and in popular parties and polyvalent singer with an electric orchestra in the capital.

Apart from the large amount of the Badéma's tapes dispatched in the Mandingo country, Kasse Mady had had no other opportunity to make an album in solo. In 1988 Ibrahima Sylla, the producer of many African hits asks the famous arranger Boncana Maïga to record a solo album with Kasse Mady. Boncana, a Songhay from Gao, has a vast musical culture. He studied for eight years in Cuba, where he founded the Maravillas de Mali.
He is a virtuoso who can perform Bach flute sonatas, played with Fania All Stars in New York, and composes hits of pop music and 12-tone string quartets! For both Kasse Mady and Boncana, cutting a record together was an adventure, from which each can marvel at the talent of the other.

Universal and timeless, this CD by one of West Africa's most beautiful voices, draws on all the musical wealth of Mali to present an album unlike anything that has been recorded before.

Guests include Orlando "Cachaito" López, Toumani Diabate and Basekou Kouyate.
One of the most sensational voices in Mali's Manding griot tradition, Kasse Mady is best known internationally for his work with Taj Mahal on the Kulanjan recording and the subsequent tour. This spontaneous, unadorned set was recorded by the Mexican Corazón label in the singer's home town, Kela, and it attests to why tradition and pop are hard to separate in Mali.

The session amounts to a high-tech field recording, but it includes two Afro-Cuban numbers, "Maimouna" and Orquesta Aragón's "Balomina Mwanga." Kasse Mady famously interpreted these songs back in the '70s, when he was playing in Malian fusion bands. Here he revisits them using traditional instruments, the wooden balafon in place of piano, and djembe drum in place of congas.

Many songs are drawn from Manding music's rich repertoire, like the opener, "Eh Ya Ye," with its rolling balafon lines and plinky acoustic guitar, crisp female voices in a swinging chorus with the slap of a djembe keeping time, and that wonderful, relaxed voice at the center. "Kaba Mansa" has a mystic air, with its cycling, minor-key vamp. There are songs from hunters' tradition and harvest celebrations, but in the end, this is a pop record, tersely arranged, and loaded with hooks and melodies.

KASSI KASSE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album.

Traditional Malian praise singer Kasse Mady Diabate recorded this album in his own village of Kela, where his ancestors developed this style of music (Mande) and passed it down through a much-loved oral tradition. Though Diabate has performed with several bands and is known for his appearances in the Mande/Cuban group Las Maravillas de Mali, this solo album garnered much attention. There is much to explore and love in these delightful pieces played with guitar, kora (12-stringed harp), ngoni (lute), balafon (xylophone), and djembe (drum). Diabate's tenor voice, coupled with the vocals of his female background singers, is profoundly dexterous, capable of flying effortlessly over intricate rising and falling melodies. In addition to traditional Mali songs, Diabate displays his Cuban influence on tunes such as "Maimouna." Also noteworthy is a performance by Cuban bassist Orlando Cachaito Lopez, renowned for his work with the Buena Vista Social Club.

  • Les Riches Heures Du Flamenco
    Pepe De La Matrona
    Les Riches Heures Du Flamenco
Recorded at the time of a recital in the Sorbonne, this disc is a rare part for the aficionados of art flamenco. It is not necessary to insist on the high artistic behaviour ensured by the three prestigious names that are "Joselito", Jacinto Almaden and Pepe of Matrona, last holders of the true flamenco and the young person Pedro Soler who is already the guide of predilection of the Masters of this art. Their meeting constitutes a memorable event; but what still makes this recording more invaluable, it is what certain would call the appearance of the "Duende" during the evening of recording, this "genius" which fills up the atmosphere of heat, of sincerity, and which makes it possible to the artists to give the maximum of themselves to exceed itself to sublimate their art. It there had happiness to find between "pure", perhaps even as wine which heats and often awakes the "Duende" and to which Pepe of Matrona did not make sad figure, and here is that this evening there one forgot the microphones and the wired for sound walls of the studio confused with the walls with the white lime of a Andalusian patio. What one will not be able to forget of this disc, it is this state of grace of four artists which, without any artifice, deliver deepest to be to them and of their art. Cough from Pepe from Matrona, its step even spluttering from Almaden when it asks to the guitarist "echa ahi perlitas" to send its "small pearls to him" (beaded notes) which inspire it, the few failures of Pedro Soler, come with the remainder. The songs succeed the dances and even rare thing on these occasions, the improvisation mèle with the festival. Thus is born Farruca, for the first time sung and danced, Taranta to which Almaden gives a tearing emotion while Joselito, removes in an irresistible dash. Soleares, prints of nobility and dignity finish in a movement sharp and impassioned without however moving away from the starting style. Pepe of Matrona reaches a top of the emotion in Seguiriyas where its voice breaks in a sob contained. Of a difficulty of execution which limits the number of its truths interpreters, Malaguenas which sings Almaden express the pain of unhappy love affairs with one moving decency that the final song of Juan Breva comes to crown virility. Tientos which Pepe of Matrona interprets, poetry of nature and the heart are also very of emotion contained. Whereas Bulerias por Soleares shout the spite of a disappointed love. Alegrias where flamenco tries to express the joy are often tinted of melancholy, Taconeos of Joselito give here a strength full with nuances and dignity. One of the "major" moments more of this evening was the "mano has mano" of Martinetes, songs of the blacksmiths where the singers stimulate themselves mutually and where the difference in personality of these two artists appears clearly. Fandangos de Huelva reveal us the poetic improvisation in the singer, here, Almaden famous in the first verse its friendship for Joselito and Pedro Soler.

  • A Meeting By The River
Today, like every other day, we wake up empty and frightened. Don't open the door to the study and being reading. Take down a musical instrument.
Let the beauty we love to be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.
    Jalaluddin Rumi
A Meeting by the River can best be described as a spontaneous outpouring of music, unhindered by convention or form, brought into being by musicians so supremely capable that the music is never labored, the technique of their craft always subservient to the final product. Cooder and Bhatt are genuine masters of the guitar and mohan vina, respectively. The latter, an instrument created by Bhatt himself, is a sort of hybrid between a guitar and a vichitra vina, and is played with a metal slide. This fact is just one of the many things that connect Bhatt's playing to Cooder's, who plays nothing but bottleneck guitar here. The musical interplay between Cooder and Bhatt is nothing short of astounding, especially so considering that they met for the first time only a half-hour before the recording of this album. The voices of the two instruments blend marvelously, first alternating melodic statements, then doing so together, each dancing around the other, playing cat and mouse, probing, answering, reflecting. They are ably accompanied by a pair of percussionists: tabla player Sukhvinder Singh Namdhari and Cooder's own son, Joachim, on dumbek. A Meeting by the River is one of those few cross-genre albums in which the listener never feels for a second that there is some kind of fusion going on; one does not hear the component parts so much as the integrated whole. However, one can theoretically separate guitar from vina, America from India, the Mississippi from the Ganges. Once this is done, the resulting music makes more sense than ever before, the combination of two traditions of stringed instruments that use slides to produce sound and value improvisation and voice-like phrasing. As good as this sounds on paper, the actual results are even more impressive. The splendor of the music is aided in its transmission by the fact that, like all Water Lily Acoustics releases, this album is masterfully recorded; each instrument is clear, distinct, and three-dimensional sounding. A Meeting by the River is a must-own, a thing of pure, unadulterated beauty, and the strongest record in Cooder's extensive catalog. ~ Daniel Gioffre, All Music Guide
