  • Ten Years Ago Today in Phistory: 6/10/00 Tokyo, Japan

Ten years ago today, I saw my first ever Phish show in Japan after I got shut out the first night. The pic from above was my actual ticket stub.
Phish 6.10.00 Zepp Theatre, Koto-ku, Tokyo, Japan

Set I: Down With Disease, Sample in a Jar, Piper, Lawn Boy, Guyute

Set II: Heavy Things, Sand, Sparkle, My Soul, Bathtub Gin, Twist, Albuquerque, Wading in the Velvet Sea, Loving Cup

Encore: The Inlaw Josie Wales, Limb By Limb

    * * * * *

I was pretty excited about my first Japan Phish show after getting shut out the night before. Senor, Beano, and myself took the subway and arrived at the venue early. The Zepp Theatre was part of a huge entertainment complex near the water which included the largest ferris wheel in Japan.

I ate Pizza Hut which included an interesting combination of corn and potato wedges on my slice. There was a meat topping, which I would classify as some sort of Spam-like substance. I met a couple of Canadians who were living in different parts of Asia and teaching English. They met all up in Tokyo to see the shows and were excited to see a band like Phish make the journey to Japan. Not too many bands visit Asia so they jumped at the chance to see Phish.

In Japan they have an extremely orderly society which trickled down to general admission concerts. At that particular show, you were admitted entrance by the number on your ticket. Some guy was shouting out numbers in Japanese and luckily the Japanese hippies I befriended the night before aided with the translation.

I had a low number, one of the first 30, so I wandered inside as soon as the doors opened. Senor and Beano had higher number on their tickets and had to wait in line. I rushed up front and saved space for them. We were very close, practically in the front row.

The theatre was very small, maybe 3,000 max capacity and we hung out with the guys from Horse. I had popped shrooms before I walked inside and smoked enough hash during the first set to kill a litter of kittens.

According to my notes, the "first set was dark and trippy." The boys opened up with a devious 20+ minute version of Down with Disease before they came up for air with Sample in a Jar and then went back off the deep end with a sensational Piper that also clocked in at 20+ minutes. They mellowed things out with Page crooning the crowd with Lawn Boy. They crowd went ape shit. Japhans love Page.

Here's a video of Lawn Boy...

By the time Phish started their fifth song of the set, they had been playing for almost an hour. They closed the set with a "creepy" Guyute. (Editor's Note: I listened to Guyute as I wrote this and it was not as evil or maniacal as I recall. I blame the psychedelics on my original assessment!)

    Here's a video of Guyute..

At set break, I said something to Senor that the first set felt more like a second set. Since it was too crowded up front, we wandered to the back of the floor for the second set. There was a lot more room to dance and breathe. The shrooms hit me hard. I kept my eyes shut and danced my ass off through the intense trip.

The Japanese Phisheads went nuts when Heavy Things was played. Farmhouse had just been released. According to my Japanese friends, Heavy Things was actually getting a lot of air play on local radio stations.

Fishman was the MVP that night. Sand was the highlight of the second set with the one-two punch of Gin and Twist also knocking me on my ass. I was pumped for a Tokyo Loving Cup! And Page did not disappoint.

During Limb by Limb, a big disco ball was lowered from the ceiling. Doesn't matter if you are American or Japanese... all hippies like flashing lights.

Overall, it was a weird show and felt as though the first set played like a second set and vice versa.

Since I was the native New Yorker with an extensive background in riding subways, I had the daunting task of leading us back to our hostel, which was not easy since we were all shroomin' our balls off. We had to take two or three different subways and luckily the subway lines are color coated. I have no idea how I managed to get us all back in one piece... but when we got back we went to the roof of our hostel and drank beers and smoked hash and glimpsed at all of the glimmer lights that illuminated the Tokyo night sky.

  • Naked Chick Thwarted
Summer camp 2010. A naked chick gets owned by security for trying to climb stage. The band barely notices. The action occurs around 2:00.

    Brennanj81's Description:
"While Mad Dog is conducting a jam during Umphrey's McGee's 2nd Set on Night II of Summercamp, a buck naked girl tries to jump on stage and while she is grabbed by security she gets ahold of audio cables on the stage. UM light tech, rodie, and DJ extroirdanaire Wade Wilby springs to action, beats the cables from her hands and then celebrates his handywork sidestage."

  • Ten Years Ago Today in Phistory: 6/9/00 Tokyo, Japan

I was among the handful of North Americans who made the trek out to Japan to see Phish in 2000. I was a tour rat those days and dropped everything to get the chance to visit the land of the rising sun with some of my closest friends and see one of my favorite bands six times along the way.

Ten years later, my trip to Japan stands out as one of the most amazing experiences of my life. And I've criss-crossed the globe extensively over the last three years, yet the Japan trip continues to be my favorite. There's not a day that goes by where I don't think about some aspect of that mind-melting journey.

I've seen Phish 151 times and the Japan tour represented some of the most exhilarating and intimate Phish experiences that I ever had. In fact two of my top 10 shows of all time are from the 2000 Japan tour.

Over the next week or so, I'm going to be writing a lot about Phish's Japan Tour in 2000. I welcome the flashbacks. These are the memories that keep me warm on frigid nights.
Phish 6/09/00, On Air East, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, Japan

Set I: Axilla, Taste, Billy Breathes, Poor Heart, Golgi Apparatus, Funky Bitch, The Moma Dance, First Tube, Chalkdust Torture

Set II: Tweezer, Bouncing Around the Room, The Mango Song, Squirming Coil, Gotta Jibboo, Meatstick, Tweezer Reprise

    Encore: You Enjoy Myself

    Poster in Tokyo subways

I flew to Tokyo from NYC with my best friend Senor and we met up with Beano, a friend from college who had been traveling all over South East Asia. We stayed in a Japanese style hostel. I had a single room that was the size of a bathroom stall which included a small locker, miniature TV, and a futon mattress. They had squat toilets and you had to basically hover over a hole in the ground to shit.

The first Tokyo show was the only Phish show on the Japan tour that I did not attend. Senor and I couldn't find a ticket. Only Beano had a ticket. Senor and I got shutout even though we showed up three hours early to find an extra. No such luck. We heard that members of the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) were selling tickets for over $100 US and that they were all counterfeits.

We ended up listening to the show at the back door to the club. I met a cool roadie who let us chill out. Before the show, I met several Japhans, including the guys from the band Horse... Yuh, Jun, and Kohei. They were 20-something musicians from Tokyo dressed up in tie-dyes. They were among a sub-culture of hardcore Japanese hippies. It was surreal. They heard me shout, "I need a miracle!" Their English wasn't great, but since they were Deadheads, they knew the expression. We struck up a conversation and had been friends ever since.

I quickly discovered that shrooms were legal in Japan (at that time) and met a few folks from Osaka who were selling them on the street. I also met a girl from California, who ended up being my Japan tour crush and we'd hang out at every show.

On just my second day in Tokyo, I ate at a noodle bar for lunch and scored hashish from Iranian dealers. I didn't get to see Phish, but it was a fun day away. I ate mushrooms and smoked hash in the alley with a dozens other Phisheads who couldn't score a ticket as we danced away to the muffled sounds of Phish's first show in Japan.

I missed the first show but would catch the next six.

  • M83
    M83

I can not tell much about this great talent from Antibes, but each of his songs I put in the music folder for sure, the folder that doesn't go to edits, unlike many other folders with the short-time music which has been pulled out from blogosphere. Each melody so rich with the certain power, and that power is individual for every person. Someone will precisely seem that its boring stuff or kitsch, but personally for me it seems that it is ingenious music which demands from the person of the maximal feedback.
First album that I heard "Saturdays = Youth" has made upon me impression more, than film "The Deep" in due time. It was really strange feeling - on the verge of depression and euphoria. But, anyway, I liked that I have started scrupulously to collect M83.
