- Watch Cage Against the Machine record live!
Shhh! Follow our Ustream to watch pop stars including Pete Doherty and Billy Bragg record a cover of the John Cage composition, 4'33"
You've got to admire the cheek. Today in a London recording studio musicians including Pete Doherty, Billy Bragg, the Kooks, Imogen Heap and Orbital are gathering to record a version of John Cage's infamous 4'33" – a composition of pure silence. The aim is to send this silence (or at least the background noise in the room at the time) to the top of the charts at Christmas, thus preventing the winner of The X Factor from reaching No 1.
The project is called Cage Against the Machine, a reference to Rage Against the Machine whose Killing in the Name stopped Joe McElderry entering the charts at No 1 last Christmas. You can watch the whole thing being recorded live with our Ustream here ...

This Swedish couple turn hip-hop tracks into haunting torch songs by stripping them of their machismo
jj, aka Joakim Benon and Elin Kastlander, are a Swedish couple whose fragile pop walks the fine line between gorgeously sighing and lazily non-committal. Their three records thus far – jj no 1, jj no 2 and, er, jj no 3 – have ranged from moments of perfection to scraps of songs that seem like neither can really be bothered. One thing they can do, however, is reimagine other people's compositions as haunting torch songs. Their second album featured a reworking of Lil Wayne's Lollipop, while the follow-up tinkered with the Game's My Life. They've also recently started leaking covers from their forthcoming mixtape, Kills, due out on Christmas Eve. This spooky, piano-led cover of the Dream's Right Side of My Brain (albeit with a different title) is the latest example of their knack for burrowing beneath the bravado and reducing hip-hop machismo to an emotional mess.
