  • Pop Jams for the Weekend

Sure, we all love Gaga, Bieber and Usher (well, two out of three for me) but this weekend when you are looking to get your pop thrills, why don’t you look a little deeper? Check out the dubstep soul stylings of tiny Londoner Katy B. Let yourself be wrapped in the warm spangles of Miami Horror’s disco embrace. Give New Zealand’s answer to Ke$ha, the unfortunately named Zowie, a chance to get your broken machine up and running. And please recognize Kid Sister’s brilliance. I’m going to keep hyping her album Ultraviolet to everyone I know until it sells a billion copies. Consider yourself warned.

  • News Roundup: 10/8/2010

In one of the year’s most interesting pairings, Cee Lo and Band of Horses recently released a split 7″ record featuring covers of each other’s tracks. The two-track recording features Cee Lo’s soulful stab at “No One’s Gonna Love You” and Band of Horses’ twangy recreation of “Georgia,” a song from Cee Lo’s upcoming album. To boost the latter tune’s southern cred, the University of Georgia’s Redcoat Marching Band apparently makes a cameo appearance. Does that make them crazy? [TopSpinMedia.com]

Speaking of Cee Lo, the rapper-turned-singer has reunited with Goodie Mob members T-Mo, Big Gipp, and Khujo in the studio. A new album — Cee Lo’s first with the group in over 10 years — will be finished shortly. [Guardian.co.uk]

Has American Idol lost its grip on the pop market? We’ll find out in mid-November, when recent Idol champion Lee DeWyze releases his major-label debut. Live It Up, whose lead single debuts next Wednesday on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, was recorded during DeWyze’s stint on the summer-long American Idols Live Tour, with co-writers like Toby Gad, John Shanks, and Espionage all lending their help. The CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival is just around the corner, with festivities kicking off on October 19th and running through the end of the weekend. For any cinephiles making the trip to New York, the festival just announced its movie lineup, with includes music-geared titles like “Love and Other Drugs,” “The Promise: Darkness on the Edge of Town,” Andrew Zuckerman’s “Music,” “Gainsbourg and His Girls” and “Imogen Heap.” [Variety.com]

Several weeks after announcing the launch of its own social network, Apple has begun talking with major labels about forming a subscription-based music service. Unlike Spotify, a similar European service that relies on advertisements for revenue, Apple says it will charge a monthly fee for unlimited streaming access. [RollingStone.com]
