- News Roundup: 10/5/2010
The Who will release a souped-up, double-disc version of Live At Leeds in November, with bonus features including a heavyweight vinyl reproduction of the original album, a hardback book, a seven-inch single of “Summertime Blues”/”Heaven & Hell,” and a Pete Townshend poster. The crown jewel, though, is a restored recording of the band’s performance in Hull on February 15, 1970, which Roger Daltrey calls “a better gig than Leeds.” [NME.com]
Brandon Flowers was kicked out of the U.K.’s Top Five this week by none other than Winston Churchill. Released last week, Reach for the Skies features samples of Churchill’s most famous speeches set to music by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force. It’s not the first hit by the former Prime Minister, though; Churchill cracked the U.K. charts nearly half a century ago with the 1965 compilation The Voice Of. [Guardian.co.uk]
Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber are the respective queen and king of YouTube, which each musician expected to pass 1 billion page views by early next month. Gaga, who averaged almost 2 million page views every day in September, will probably get there first, but Beiber has been receiving the most page views of any YouTube artist since the early summer. Lil Wayne’s 10-month jail sentence will come to an end in November, but don’t expect Weezy to be doing any more long-distance collaborations during the homestretch. After being caught listening to music on an MP3 player, the rapper has been saddled with 23 hours of solitary confinement a day, with one hour allotted for solitary recreation time. I Am Not a Human Being, his eighth studio album, was digitally released last month and will hit stores in CD form on October 12th. [PopEater.com]
The Beach Boys have yet to confirm rumors about a reunion tour in 2011, despite Mike Love’s claim that he’ll rejoin Al Jardine and Brian Wilson to celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary. What has been confirmed is an upcoming Beach Boys-inspired movie, which will follow Mamma Mia’s lead by combining the group’s music with a fictional narrative. John Stamos will co-produce. Glastonbury sold all 137,500 tickets within their first four hours of availability, despite the fact that the festival’s headliners have yet to be announced. There’s a good chance that U2 will be involved, though. [Guardian.co.uk]
Переслать - Video of the Day: Kisses, "People Can Do the Most Amazing Things"
Jesse Kivel is in the pretty decent smart-guy indie band Princeton, but he’s also got a secret life. He’s pals with old-time disco producer Alec R. Costandinos (who famously worked on Cerrone’s “Love in C Minor“) and through spending time with him, Jesse picked up some skills. Teaming up with guitarist Zinzi Edmundson, Kivel formed Kisses as an outlet for the laid-back, sun-bleached disco sound he’d cooked up. Next week Kisses release their debut album The Heart of the Nightlife and it’s really, really good. Too up to be chillwave (ugh, that term), too down to be dance floor filler, it occupies the fragile zone between the bedroom and the disco where dreams come true. This is the first video from the album and it has a sweaty old guy, Kivel cold rocking a bow tie, and Edmundson’s sweet bangs. Hope you like it as much as I do….

There’s also a nicely robotic remix of the song by St. Etienne’s Pete Wiggs floating around. Download it here.
