  • FLAMENCO de Carlos Saura
FLAMENCO is a gorgeous documentary. A treat to your ears, eyes and soul that includes performances from some of the best flamenco singers, dancers and guitarists. Helped by the superb cinematography by Vittorio Storaro, director Carlos Saura (La Caza, 1966; Cr?a Cuervos, 1976; Mama cumple cien a?os, 1979; Tango, 1998) brings with this film the "Light of Flamenco to the World".
Performance as art, flamenco as art and performance is what this film captures. Minimilist in tradional theatrical enticements this film captures the pure essence of the total flamenco experience. No fancy Hollywood set designs, extravagant staging is nil, this is pure art, the performances stand alone. At times the lighting only reveals a siloutte, never detracting from the pure essence. The film captures an indoor gitano gathering where all participants are involved, from just handclapping and chorus to center stage vocals and dance, all the gitanos interact and compliment one another. The beauty in this film comes from different angles, the authenticity, the various styles of flamenco, the emotions the artists emote and the feelings that are brought out in the viewer. So many different people perform that it is hard to identify indidviduals, which may be just the intent of the director as the cohesion of the gitano family in performance seems to be most important. One of the intriguing aspects of this performance is that there are so many "older" performers, who dominate and captivate the viewer. If one listens and closes ones eyes momentarily, it is hard to imagine one is listening to people well into their sixties and older. A brilliant moment is when a young gitano of maybe twelve years of age performs a stunning dance, a visually blazing with speed dervish solo and then is suddenly joined by an elder gitano who accompanies him. The juxtaposition is unforgetable as the young boy and elder each pay homage to each other, in unison, dancing off the set. The guitar work is fabulous by various masters including a sensational set by Paco de Lucia and even the modern interpretations of flamenco by Ketama. The rich vocals are guttural at times but the emotions of the sounds come from the deepest parts of the soul. The sounds of pain and passion, love and desire, grief and hope, solice and community, the soul of the gitanos comes through loud and clear. This is one to not be missed for complete flamenco that includes guitar, dance and vocals, Andalusian nights are calling, los gitanos te esperan.

This beautifully photographed documentary is Spanish-filmmaker Carlos Saura's tribute to the beauty and diversity of Spain's national dance. Using only the minimalist setting of an abandoned Seville train station and the costumes of more than 300 performers, this is a veritable feast of exciting flamenco dances, songs, and guitar playing. Some of the better known artists include Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar, and Lole Manuel. The film features little dialog, but the soundtrack is so terrific and the pageantry so riveting that little is needed. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

  • Tabla Beat Science - Tala Matrix
Call it an aggregation of some of the best contemporary percussionists: Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, and Asian Underground star Talvin Singh combine under the sonic washes of producer Bill Laswell to show the possibilities of Indian percussion. It's definitely a beatfest, but one of subtlety, where what is being said isn't as important as the way it's being stated, and the dialogue between hands includes a lot of silences. Gurtu comes from a more jazz tradition, Hussein a classical background, and Singh represents the brash young things of the dance floor. Mostly Laswell leaves it to them to provide the sonic entertainment, which is as it should be with delicate swathes of sound barely intruding, just coloring the proceedings. While it's not for everyone, those who love Indian percussion in all its forms will find this album a complete joy.

This is definitely a classic, a real ground breaker. One look at the lineup consisting of precussion legends and todays top sonic manipulators, you know this is guaranteed to be an interesting listen.

First off I must say those who thought this had something to do with Indian Classical music will be dissapointed. TBS is an ensemble of top artists who joined to push the boundries to electronic music today. And what an amazing job they do! Straight up, powerful, precussion with tribal beats and Laswell's amazing bass and production. Not to leave out the others, Karsh Kale does some fantastic programming on Palmistry, Talvin singh is trippy on the manipulations. All in all I recommend this to all open-minded listeners who like a bit of tribal, dub, and massive Laswell basslines.

With their debut CD Tala Matrix, the project known as Tabla Beat Science has essentially taken the rich and time-honored tradition of the tabla (a pair of North Indian hand drums) and fused it with contemporary electronica studio wizardry. Tala Matrix is dedicated to the memory of the late, great, and innovative tabla virtuoso Ustad Alla Rakha (1919-2000). The Tabla Beat Science project is comprised of one of Ustad Alla Rakha's sons, the tabla superman Zakir Hussain. Additional members include the venerated sarangi player Ustad Sultan Khan; Indian and jazz percussion innovator Trilok Gurtu; New York drummer Karsh Kale; bass, drum, and tabla visionary Talvin Singh; and music programmer Brad Somatik. Producer/bassist Bill Laswell, who "conceived and constructed" the CD, acts as the catalyst for the outfit, adding the bottom end with his dub basslines and the overall aesthetic with his studio prowess. More of a consortium than a full-blown collaboration, not one of the songs on Tabla Matrix features all members of the group. Zakir Hussain's many tracks are among the best on the album, though Trilok Gurtu's funky Big Brother and Talvin Singh's Don't Worry.Com are both extremely compelling. The often zombie-ridden doldrums of electronica should benefit immensely from this experimental union with tabla. An excellent CD that deserves to be heard many times by many people, Tala Matrix manages to be innovative without loosing sight of tradition.

  • Orquesta Riverside - Baracoa
Orquesta Riverside were a Cuban musical group that became one of the most acclaimed Cuban orchestras of the 1940s and 50s. The orchestra was formed in the late '30s, and in the beginning was directed by local musician Enrique González Mantici. In 1947, that honor was taken by saxophone player Pedro Vila. During the '50s, Orquesta Riverside's Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms were celebrated throughout Latin America.

Members included Tito Gómez who joined in 1939, and Manuel "Guajiro" Mirabal Vazquez (later of Afro-Cuban All Stars) who joined in 1960.
