  • Djivan Gasparyan - The Soul Of Armenia
The acknowledged master of the Armenian reed instrument known as the duduk, Djivan Gasparayan was born just outside of the nation's capital city of Yerevan, first picking up the instrument at age six. After joining the Tatool Altounian National Song and Dance Ensemble in 1948, his first professional engagement was as a soloist with the Yerevan Philharmonic Orchestra; Gasparayan later went on tour extensively throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the United States, and in 1973 was the first musician given the honorary title of People's Artist of Armenia by the nation's government. Gasparayan's commercial breakthrough followed in 1989 when he was featured on Peter Gabriel's soundtrack to the Martin Scorsese film The Last Temptation of Christ; he subsequently contributed to the soundtracks of The Russia House, and the cable TV production Storm and Sorrow, additionally performing with the Kronos Quartet and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. His debut solo album, I Will Not Be Sad in This World, appeared on the Opal label in 1989; recordings including Ask Me No Questions, Apricots From Eden, and Moon Shines at Night. In 1998, Gasparayan teamed with virtuoso guitarist Michael Brook for Black Rock; Armenian Fantasies followed two years later. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

  • Dub Colossus in a Town Called Addis
When Nick Page) (aka Dubulah, a charter member of the legendary worldbeat ensemble Transglobal Underground), spent a summer in Addis Ababa, he quite unsurprisingly ended up in the studio with a revolving cast of local singers and instrumentalists. The result of that month-long experiment was this utterly entrancing album, a bubbling stew of reggae, dub, Azmari singing, traditional instruments, and rich horn charts (courtesy of the Horns of Negus). At times the musical fusion recalls some of Bill Laswell's work, especially the dark and dreamy arrangements he has written for his Ethiopian wife Gigi, and at other times the music swirls and dances in entirely unique and unexpected ways. "Shegye Shegitu," which primarily features piano, handclaps, and call-and-response vocals, is good but not spectacular; the one-drop extravaganza "Black Rose" (on which charming female vocals are accompanied by what sounds like a strummed dulcimer and are then quietly upstaged by a brief and jaw-dropping guitar solo) and "Yeka Sub City Rockers" (with its weird flute, trippy ambience and keening male vocals) are much more impressive, and for the most part the program holds up the high standard it sets. Strongly recommended to all adventurous dub fans. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi

This project is the vision of Dub Colossus - Dubulah - aka Nick Page. Composer, guitarist, bass player and programmer Nick started his music career with Michael Riley (Steel Pulse) and has since worked with a long list of notable artists and eccentrics. In 1990 he formed Trans-Global Underground with Tim Whelan and Hammid Man-Tu, produced-wrote-played six albums before leaving in 1997 to form Temple of Sound with Neil Sparkes.

Dub Colossus in a Town Called Addis was inspired by meeting, writing and working with Ethiopian singers and musicians in Addis Ababa in August 2006. The collaboration between Dub Colossus and these amazing musicians covers Azmari and traditional styles as well as the popular singing styles of the 60s and 70s.

Singer Sintayehu 'Mimi' Zenebe is known as "the Edith Piaf" of Ethiopian song and owns the Doku Club in Addis, a venue devoted to traditional Azmari music. Fellow singer, Tsedenia Gebremarkos, is a well-known and respected performer and radio presenter, and winner of a Kora award as the best female singer in East Africa in 2004.

Master saxophonist, Feleke Hailu, is also a classical composer, lecturer and Head of Music at the Yared Music School. He is part of a dynastic tradition that stretches back far beyond the classic hits his father arranged for the Ethiopiques series's legend Mahmoud Ahmed.

Extraordinary pianist Samuel Yirga is an exciting new discovery - a young prodigy of classical and ethiojazz and student at the Yared Music School.

They are joined by Teremage Woretaw who, with his plaintive voice and messenqo (one-string fiddle), is a youthful carrier of the ancient Azmari tradition.

Mimi, Tsedenia, Feleke, Samuel and Teremage all travelled to Real World Studios to finish the album, and for most of them this was their first time travelling out of Ethiopia.

The other musicians who took part in the recordings in the makeshift studio in downtown Addis were Bahta Gerbrehiwot (one of the great Ethiopian singers of the 1960s), Fasika Hailu on a traditional harp (the krar), Getachew Werkley on flute, Desta Fikra and Tawebe Tadesse on vocals.

  • Vlatko Stefanovski & Miroslav Tadic - Live In Zagreb
Creativity is something that cannot be forced and the most distinctive and rewarding artistic fellowships are those that follow a natural path to fruition. What brought together guitarists Vlatko Stefanovski and Miroslav Tadic 15 years ago was an act of faith. They were introduced to each other by another musician who was aware of their mutual love for guitars and Macedonian folk music. In the period that followed they went to work on Krushevo (M.A. Recordings 1997), a record that is considered to be seminal and groundbreaking.

Since Krushevo was released, Stefanovski and Tadic have not only made three records together, but they have continued to unite in concert settings, despite the numerous projects they both have in addition to this partnership. Their collaborative project proved to be anything but problematic, instead feeding and nurturing an alchemical connection. The tours that followed have allowed them further to continue to explore the possibilities that have been laid at their feet. Building upon their shared love of bending genres until they break, Stefanovski and Tadic seamlessly blur the lines between traditional folk music, jazz, rock, flamenco and classical. It isn't about where the songs begin but where they end, and that gives the duo its distinct flavor.

In 2005, the duo welcomed a new member, the Bulgarian flautist Teodosii Spasov, adding a new dimension to the music. Live in Zagreb was recorded during a summer tour in Croatia in 2007, when the trio itself expanded into a quartet by introducing the Indian master percussionist Swapan Chaudhuri. The album is a stunning celebration of the project's past, present and future. It sums up the whole trajectory, as it begins with the duo guitars, then the trio is introduced, and finally the quartet is heard.

Starting with "Dafino Vino Crveno," (Dafina with cheeks like red wine), the guitar duo plays with a bright fire that never goes out, even on more laid-back, plaintive numbers such as this one. It seems that the two players are completely engaged in conversation as they magically complete each other's lines. "Izlezi Vido" (Come out Vida, to see a miracle), is a funky folk song with the two guitars setting off into improvisations like twins joined at the hip, something to be expected from virtuosi with such distinguished backgrounds.

"Ej Ti Momche Ohridjanche" (Hey you boy from Ohrid) is an upbeat reel that introduces the trio with Spasov. What is amazing about this trio is that the unit has no single sound identity, though their aesthetic is distinct and readily identifiable. Owing to their long-standing association, the three communicate with heightened perception, anticipating each others' curveballs and responding in kind. When improvising, the trio weaves in and out of meter and harmony, yet always emerges together before the mood shifts anew. The structure of the melody is respected but outside of that it's open season.

For a long time, this project drew associations with guitarist John McLaughlin's Shakti, because of the musicians' virtuoso abilities, improvisational madness and breadth of influences, their folk music associations, and the emotional depth of their style. The introduction of Chaudhuri makes such comparisons more vivid and tangible. Apart from holding a master's degree in music and being conferred honors for his distinguished contributions in the field of tabla by the government of India, and as well as performing with world renowned artists such as sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, Chaudhuri is also a member of the teaching staff at the California Institute of the Arts in California. So is Miroslav Tadic.

On tracks such as "Prosheta Se Jovka Kumanovka," (Yovka from Kumanovo went for a stroll), and especially "Anadolu oyun havasi," which is a 16 minute tour de force, the quartet's seamless interplay is quite remarkable. It delivers consistently inventive music while combining the discipline of classical chamber music with the openness of free improvisation. There is a perfect balance between the two, strung halfway between heaven and earth.

The group's music in general is a milestone in cross-cultural music, fusing Macedonian folk music with various styles including the arcane percussion disciplines of Indian music. This is thoughtful, inspired guitar work woven out of tasteful tones and performed with brilliant virtuosity against a sublime backdrop of percussion and flute. The album is the audio equivalent of pure beauty.

    Tracks:
Dafino Vino Crveno; Izlezi Vido; Jovano Jovanke, Ej Ti Momche Ohridjanche; Kasapsko Oro; Prosheta Se Jovka Kumanovka; Kalesh Andja, Eleno Kerko, Anadolu Oyun Havasi.
