Born to Run The Hissing of Summer Lawns Another Green World Agharta
Physical Graffiti The Basement Tapes Toys in the Attic Pieces of the Sky

Smack dab in the middle of the decade, 1975 was the polyester peak of the ’70s, the year that captured all the glorious excesses of the Me Decade. Elton John presided over the pop charts — his pull so powerful he could help give Neil Sedaka, that old pro who last topped the charts in the years before the Beatles, not one but two number ones — and he ruled a year that saw Morris Albert sing about his feelings, a year where Captain & Tennille preached that “Love Will Keep Us Together,” a year where Glen Campbell was a “Rhinestone Cowboy,” and a year where everybody was “Kung Fu Fighting.” It was such a gaudy, glitzy surface that it seemed like nothing might exist underneath, which is naturally the time that a lot of interesting things are happening. Disco began to edge its way into the mainstream, getting so close that U.K. art-rockers Roxy Music and David Bowie claimed it as their own; proto-punk noises could be heard on both sides of the Atlantic, with the trash-loving Dictators celebrating cars and girls in the U.S. and the miscreants of Dr. Feelgood kicking out malevolent blues-rock in the U.K. But most attention was directed toward the future of rock & roll, one Bruce Springsteen, who released his galvanizing third album Born to Run and wound up on the covers of both Time and Newsweek in the same week, instantly catapulting the once-obscure singer/songwriter toward the ranks of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Paul Simon, who all had banner years in 1975 as well. Some of this was drowned out thanks to Aerosmith, who injected plenty of sleaze into teenage veins thanks to Toys in the Attic, but Led Zeppelin remained the true golden gods of rock & roll, ruling with the mighty Physical Graffiti — a double album so excessive and glorious it could only have come out in 1975.

Despite having classic albums in abundance, 1975 isn’t one of those magical years like 1967 or 1977. It doesn’t have a mystique — it’s not the peak of psychedelia or the birth of punk — but it does have so much great music that it’s hard to whittle down favorites into a concise list. And ‘75 does have many of my favorite albums and singles — Dylan, Bruce, Roxy, Neil, Elton, sure, but also Dr. Feelgood, Kilburn and the High-Roads, Ducks Deluxe, and “Junior’s Farm,” plus plenty of guilty pleasures that I have no guilt in loving (“Bad Blood” chief among them). As always when faced with a year as overloaded as this, I try not to have singles from classic albums appear on the singles list — i.e., no room for the single “Young Americans” because the album Young Americans ranks highly — but that doesn’t mean that I wound up listing everything I loved from ‘75…but everything here is something I do love.

I was 10 years old in 1975 and making the transition from Top 40 radio (WLS, Chicago) to AOR radio (WDAI, Chicago), so my singles list consists of stuff I was hearing on the radio and liked at the time. The sole exception was the Gil Scott-Heron tune which I saw on Saturday Night Live (giving me the correct answer to the question “What’s the word?” for all time). On the other hand, my album picks are all albums I discovered later, except for Paul McCartney and Wings which I listened to all the time in 1975. Special mention must go to Agharta for ripping the top of my head off and opening up new worlds for me in a way few albums ever have.

As much as I would like to pretend that I knew Roxy Music existed in 1975 (Love Is the Drug, y'all!!) or that disco wasn’t nearly as lame as it seemed (thanks, KC & your infernal Sunshine Band), or that power pop and punk were bubbling up all around, I had no clue. I only knew about what got played on Detroit rock radio and what Casey told me about on American Top 40. It meant I had a pretty sheltered view of the musical world for sure, but I still love all these songs today.

What sticks out most: Bennie Maupin’s snaking bass clarinet on Eddie Henderson’s “Galaxy,” Ron Carter’s megaton bassline on “People Make the World Go Round,” John Paul Jones’ Stevie-inspired clavinet on “Trampled Under Foot,” Reggie Lucas’ swooping guitar attack on “Saturday Night Special,” Brian Eno’s weird everything on “In Dark Trees,” the Sky High touch of Larry and Fonce Mizell (heard across Gears, Places and Spaces, The Shadow Do!, and Fancy Dancer), Minnie Riperton (always Minnie Riperton), and Tennyson Stephens — er, technically just the head of Tennyson Stephens protruding from the right shoulder of Phil Upchurch on the cover of a neglected soul-jazz masterpiece. Thank you, hip-hop, for turning me onto roughly a quarter of this stuff and providing the gateway into much of the remainder.

  • Video of the Day: The School – Can't Understand

If you check the fine print of my contract you’ll see that I’m obligated to post about the School every time they release something. I’ve gone ape over their previous videos, made a fool of myself over their album Loveless Unbeliever, and now I’m going to say embarrassing things about the video they just made for “Can’t Understand.” Or maybe just this once I should show some restraint and merely tell you that if you love the girl group sound of the ’60s, the girl-fronted indie pop of the ’80s, and the now sound of modern pop, this is a band you need to hear.

Not very restrained, was it? Oh well, this is a really snappy video to go with a beautifully wistful pop song. Enjoy!

  • The Summer Jam That Wouldn't Die: LaRoux's Bulletproof

LaRoux may have released “Bulletproof” way back in summer of 2009 but it’s been slowly working its way around the globe in impressive fashion, going platinum in Australia, gold in New Zealand, and finally hitting the U.S. this summer. It’s been getting all sorts of airplay, tons of downloads (nearly a million!), and hanging around the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100, too. I guess that’s not that surprising considering what a brilliant song it is. Elly Jackson has an incredibly strong voice, the music is note-perfect synth pop for 2010, and the lyrics have a powerful message of, well, empowerment, that really seems to speak to people. Lots of people! You Tube is jam packed with all sorts of people, just regular people like you and me, doing covers of Bulletproof. Let’s do a little compare and contrast….
