Antoine Dodson, who became the toast of YouTube after providing vocals for the popular viral single “Bed Intruder,” has made enough money to buy a safer home for his family. The Gregory Brothers, who created the tune by sampling Dodson’s voice and adding it to an AutoTuned R&B soundtrack, are splitting the song’s profits 50/50 with Dodson. Meanwhile, “Bed Intruder” continues to chart well on iTunes, where it has sold over 100,000 copies. [HollywoodReporter.com]
Paste Magazine may have put its printing operations on hold, but the company is still moving forward with the first ever Paste Tour. Leonard Skinner, the Florida-based gym teacher who inspired Lynyrd Skynyrd’s name, died yesterday morning at the age of 77. Skinner, who taught several of the Skynyrd bandmates during their high school years, was a notorious stickler for the school’s policy against long hair, often sending his students the principal’s office for violating the rules. Although his new gig as an American Idol judge won’t be confirmed until tomorrow, Aerosmith vocalist Steven Tyler is making the most of the spotlight by launching a solo career. The frontman will release his first single, “Love Lives,” in Japan on November 24th. Tyler wrote the song for the Japanese action flick “Space Battleship Yamato,” which opens the following week. Asthmatic Kitty, an indie label founded in 1999 by Sufjan Stevens and friends, wants its fans to be wary of the bulk discounts offered by online retailers like Amazon.com. “We… feel like the work that our artists produce is worth more than a cost of a latte,” the label explained in a recent email, before going on to throw its support to alternative retailers like Bandcamp, which allows artists to sell their material directly to fans. The self-described “pop noir” vocalist Nicole Atkins has left Columbia Records and signed with Razor & Tie. ”Vultures,” her newest single and her first release for the label, is currently streaming at Stereogum. [Stereogum.com]
Переслать - Video of the Day: Shrag, "Rabbit Kids"
There’s nothing better than waking up, switching on your computer and after a quick check to make sure your friend count hasn’t gone down overnight, discovering a favorite new band. I’d heard about Shrag but hadn’t really checked them out. Maybe it was the name or the nagging suspicion that they might be dodgy, because really every band that gets some good buzz can’t be good, can they? A friend posted their video this morning and I decided I’d give it a play. Wouldn’t you know that it turns out Shrag are nothing less than wonderful. Male/female vocal dynamics, mopey but tuneful songs and a decidedly non-dodgy indie pop sound! Kind of like a Los Campesinos! who aren’t quite so terribly impressed with themselves… “Rabbit Kids” has been out for a long while, and the band released their second album Life! Death! Prizes! earlier this year. I’d suggest you do like me and get cracking on tracking it down!
