  • Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw Gold & Wax
    Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw
    Gold & Wax, 2006
Ejigayehu Shibabaw, better known as Gigi, is one of the few singers from the Horn of Africa -- the first since countrywoman Aster Aweke, in fact -- to break through with a major-label release. Gigi grew up in rural Ethiopia, listening to traditional and church music, before moving to the capital, Addis Ababa, when she was 14. There, her musical horizons broadened, hearing the local pop music "and all kinds of American music we could get on the radio. After that I went to Kenya, and there I was exposed to a lot of different African music, a different kind of beat." Returning home, she became a singer with the National Theatre before making her debut record, following which she worked with a puppet company, whose touring took her to France. It was there her real breakthrough occurred, playing a world music festival called Imagineer which resulted in a live recording that made her known in Europe. After returning to Ethiopia in 1997, she was granted a U.S. visa. The New World offered plenty of challenges and she grasped them all eagerly, discovering jazz in Oakland and hitting the road with countrywoman Aweke, "my favorite singer." She made another album, One Ethiopia, before coming to the attention of Palm Pictures honcho Chris Blackwell. She was paired with prolific producer Bill Laswell, who used talent like jazzmen Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter behind her on Gigi, her debut for the label. However, for all the electronic feel of the disc, no loops or samples were employed -- everything was played, and as live as possible. Gigi began promoting the record by appearing at the 2001 WOMEX world music conference in Holland, prior to a U.S. tour. ~ Chris Nickson

Taking the world music scene by storm with her self-titled debut, Ethiopian singer Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw picks up right where she left off five years ago with Gold & Wax. Producer Bill Laswell is again behind the boards, and he's assembled another cosmopolitan cast of backing musicians, who range from Guns N' Roses guitarist Buckethead and Indian production team Midival Punditz to P-Funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell and jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer. Ever the master aural architect, Laswell finds a way fuse styles as well as the players' strong personalities into a seamless whole. Gigi herself soars siren-like over the top of ambient leaning tunes, or she digs in with her plaintive high-pitched voice on more rhythmically anchored pieces. Standouts include the English-language "Utopia," the rhythmically churning and horn-driven "Salam," and the anthemic "Gomelayeye." Not much of a departure from her debut, but there's no point in complaining about more of a very good thing. - Tad Hendrickson

The long-awaited follow-up to Gigi's stellar debut has finally landed. On her second effort, Gold & Wax, Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shibabaw has again proven her ability to seamlessly work the songs of her Ethiopian ancestry into a contemporary vocal sound befitting the worlds of jazz, electronica and even dub-inspired African rhythms. Produced by Bill Laswell, Gold & Wax maintains an illustrious gleam; every instrument falls perfectly into place, centered on the singer's near-angelic range.
The praise for Gigi was universal and unabashed. The Miami Herald rightfully called Gigi "Ethiopia's gift to the world," while The NY Times described her sound as "full of unexpected angles and modal curves." Her vocals, according to XLR8R, "sounds sweeter than a cup of Ethiopian honey wine"; while the Village Voice agreed saying she has "not just a luxuriously rich voice but an unassumingly cosmopolitan presence." Gigi is an ambassador of ancient sound with modern sensibilities.

  • Ulman - electrokustica
    Ulman
    electrokustica, 2009
Electrokustica is the latest album by the German band Ulman. It's their third full length album which contains eleven new recordings. Ulman exists out of four musicians including diatonic accordion, violin, hurdy-gurdy, flutes and lots of percussion and samples. The opening track starts with a smooth accordion and percussion and reminds me a bit of the Gotan project's first album. Although Ulman plays a little less tango and a little more jazzy style. What follows are two up-tempo instrumentals called Fast TP and Diego's polska. Nice dance tunes with interesting arrangements and sometimes strong play. In Diego's polska they start great, like early Hoven droven music, but somehow they let the melody drown in a bit to bombastic arrangement after my personal taste. Than a totally different rap-folk song called Wieder sehen and a more relaxed (although the title might suggest differently) folk tune called Elend und blut and the very nice, clearly Swedish inspired song Elins DnB which is one of the most balanced and best tracks on this album. From Nun, a nice jazzy-folk track, until the last track Valleby the band takes it a bit calmer and shows that they have many faces and a lot of creativity. This album has a lot to offer and absolutely not monotonous. But at a few moments I personally preferred a bit more unity in the concept of the album.
