- Angelika Niescier & André Nendza - Holzlinienspiel
Angelika Niescier & André Nendza
Holzlinienspiel, 2000

Charlie Mariano
Beauty, 2004
Charlie Mariano, who is now eighty-two, has always been a pioneer of beauty in jazz. Where other jazz musicians cause opposites to collide, working with syncopation and dissonance, he has always searched for the greatest possible harmony, and did so even though, at Charlie Parker's side, he was partly responsible for one of the greatest cultural clashes of the twentieth century. But Mariano was one of the very few who knew hot to transform the subversive energy of bebop into a spiritual urgency. When he was no longer able to strike gold in jazz alone, he sought and found new inspiration in Indian music. For Mariano, music functioned like a funnel with which he concentrated the maximum amount of positive tension into the smallest point possible. Any attempt to put his spirituality into words is bound to fail, because his sounds are scarcely tangible. An entire century culminates in Mariano's playing. He demands an entire ear, an entire listener.
What this old, wise man of the saxophone is now offering up to our ears, together with the Beirach on piano and the Hübner brothers on violin and bass, is the quintessence of all his musical expeditions of past decades. Naturally a seasoned expert like Mariano knows that he cannot answer all the fundamental questions of life himself. And hence the composition of this quartet is no coincidence. Beauty results not from the typical session acquaintances that can be so fatal in jazz: recording three takes each of eight pieces on two afternoons, only to go their own ways thereafter and then join up again a year and a half later for a joint tour. No, the Beauty quartet is part of a musical family tree that spans more than two generations. Richie Beirach is strongly marked by his teacher Charlie Mariano. He has manifested his view of profound beauty in sound in the bands of John Abercrombie and Dave Liebman, among others. Beirach was in turn mentor to the German musician Gregor Hübner, who lives in New York, and in a trio with George Mraz they enjoyed success with unconventional arrangements of compositions by Béla Bartók and Federico Mompou. Marino, Beirach, and Hübner were already working as a trio before they brought Hübner's brother Veit on board for additional grounding. That this constellation works at all lies not least in the contrasting timbres of saxophone and violin, which never get in each other's way, or even produce interference.
No matter whether the quartet is performance jazz standards or originals of its own composition, it produces a fundamental tone of cosmic harmony that causes us to forget the corset of profane genres and categories. Perhaps this music is jazz, because it is instrumental, and improvisation runs through all the pieces as an essential constant. But the shared inspiration promises a great deal more. Cultural set pieces, states of mind, and experiences from Europe, America, and Asia are here woven together in an unprogrammatic way that transcends epochs, so that the place of origin of a given attitude or idiom no longer matters at all. Rather, each individual note evokes a silent, undistorted desire for the next one. The music just happens, without regard to the expectations or habits of potential listeners. If this music can be called jazz at all it is because Mariano, Beirach, and the two Hübners return after an odyssey of more than a century to the origins of innocence that were probably inherent to it only in legend.
Three generations, with completely different experiences behind them, put together their three-dimensional image of beauty to create a mosaic that is so complex, homogeneous, dense, and yet transparent that it precludes even another word about it or any attempt to describe it. Anyone who has ears may listen. . . Perhaps it is out there after all, the beauty independent of the human sense, which comes as close to the divine as the pyramids, the music of Monteverdi and Bach, and the altarpieces of Jan van Eyck once did.

The meeting of three virtuosos of African music playing a Jazz tinted with tradittional sounds and feeling.
This is a pretty unusual jazz trio, formed by African musicians playing, apart from the piano, African instruments. The string sounds are from the kora, a traditional African harp that yields an almost Celtic harp sound. Without exception, all songs are excellent and the kora has an important part in the music. The songs are all joy and some have African lyrics. Some have a Caribbean beat or something like that. A must listen for those looking for different sounds, harp-related tunes and open to innovations without willing to being struck by experimentalist stuff as Zeena Parkins. By the way, the kora does not sound boring as we use to think of harp music, it actually reminds me of Jean Luc Ponty or even Pat Metheny.

Jihad Akl - Violinist
Jihad Akl was born in 1968 in Beirut, Lebanon. His father, Ahmad Said Akl, was a musician and a teacher. Jihad spent his childhood fascinated by the violin, which he learned from his father.
In 1974, at the age of 6, Jihad Akl won an estimation prize in a musical recital, from the occidental conservatory for the "Tournament of the Genius Kids".
From then on, his father endeavored to teach Jihad music and playing the violin in the most difficult circumstances of the civil war in Lebanon. During those years, there was no access to the Music Conservatory, and under very difficult conditions, the father, recognizing Jihad's gift for music, continued to coach and help Jihad to master his talent at home.
Jihad worked hard and consistently with his private teacher, studying musical notes, and playing the violin for 10 hours a day. He loved his instrument, and expressed his feelings through music, and thus the long journey to fame and success began, from humble beginnings and little resources.

Richard Galliano (born December 12, 1950) is a French accordionist.
He was drawn to music at an early age, starting with the accordion at 4, influenced by his father Lucien, an accordionist originally from Italy, living in Nice.
After a long and intense period of study (he took up lessons on the trombone, harmony, and counterpoint at the Academy of Music in Nice), at 14, in a search to expand his ideas on the accordion, he began listening to jazz and heard on records the great trumpet player Clifford Brown. "I copied all the choruses of Clifford Brown, impressed by his tone and his drive, his way of phrasing over the thunderous playing of Max Roach." Fascinated by this new world, Richard was amazed that the accordion had never been part of this musical adventure.
Some later collaborations include George Mraz, Al Foster, Juliette Greco, Charles Aznavour, Ron Carter, Chet Baker, Enrico Rava, Martial Solal, Miroslav Vitouš, Trilok Gurtu, Jan Garbarek, Michel Petrucciani, Michel Portal, Eddy Louiss, Wynton Marsalis, and Toots Thielemans. He was a key member of Claude Nougaro's band for several years as a pianist and accordionist.

HEREПереслать - Anouar Brahem - Astrakan Café
The Tunisian oud genius has done it again. Anouar Brahem has issued only five records under his own name over the past decade, each more adventurous than the last, without compromising his original vision: for the music of his region to meet with the other music of Africa and Asia and create a delirious sound that is equal thirds past, present, and future, along the precipice of historical lineage. For Brahem there is no attempt to synthesize the globe, or even the sounds of the East with those of the West. He is content in his knowledge that sound is infinite, and that his tradition, as it evolves and expands into a deeper pan-African/trans-Asian whole, is more than large enough for a master musician to rummage through in one lifetime. Astrakan Café, the follow-up to his brilliant Thimar, is a smaller-sounding recording that reaches farther into the deep crags of the Balkans. With Barbaros Erköse on clarinet and the Indian and Turkish percussion stylings of the professor of somber precision, Lassad Hosni, Brahem's oud enters into a dialogue, musically, that has never before existed (though he has collaborated with both players previously). Erköse is a Turkish clarinetist of gypsy origin. His low, warm, rounded tones are consonant with the oud. Erköse plays equal parts music of the Balkan and Arab worlds with a tinge of the ancient klezmorim whispering their secrets through his horn. Despite the journeying these musicians do here, they never stray far from the takht, a small ensemble capable of improvising to the point of drunken ecstasy. Listening through Astrakan Café, you can hear the gypsy flamenco tied deeply to Indian ragas and even a kind of Eastern jazz. But there is no hyperactivity in it, no need to cram as many traditions as possible into one putridly excessive mix that expresses nothing but the novelty of the moment. Astrakan Café has many highlights: its two title tracks that have their roots in Russian and Azerbaijan music; "Ashkabad," which is an improvisation on a melody from the folk music of Turkmenistan; "Astara," a modal improvisation based on love songs from Azerbaijan; "Halfounie," a segment from a Brahem-composed soundtrack inspired by the medina or marketplace in Tunis; and "Parfum de Gitanie," which takes a fragment from Ethiopian sacred music, slows it to the point of stillness, and waxes lazily and jazzily over the top, with the oud and the clarinet trading syncopated eights. This is deeply personal, profound music. It is also highly iconographic, with timelessness woven through every measure. The only "exotica" on Astrakan Café is its "otherness" out of space and any discernable era. The tempos are languid and full of purpose, the dynamics clean and clearly demarcated, the tones and modes warm, rich, and linear. This would be traditional music if a tradition such as this -- which is original, though adapted from many sources on inspiration -- actually existed. Highly recommended ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

Flûtes-gasba du Nord-Est de l'Algérie. Airs pour gasba et bendir,2008
The population diversity in North East Algeria makes it a true place of ethnic, linguistic and cultural blending. In Algeria, the rural world is deeply attached to the music related to the cults of the Saints. Associated to some secular songs, these musics liven up social events such as pilgrimages, birth, healing, end of harvest, weddings and baptism ceremonies etc...During those ceremonies the singers chant incantations vaticinating to a background of plaintive gasba melodies and haunting bendir rhythms.
The gasba (from the Arab "qasba" meaning "reed" and, in general sense, "reed flute") is a flute with a simple mouth hole. When accompanying a singer, flautists get as close as possible to his voice and melodic formulas. The bendir is intimately linked to the gasba, as it is its sole accompanying instrument. This frame-drum is approximately 50 centimeters in diameter and tensed with goatskind.
The gasba reed flute is one of the most emblematic instruments of traditional Algerian music, especially in the region of Annaba.
Contrary to its seemingly simple aspect, its practice, based on the continuous breathing technique, requires great dexterity. The gasba is played by the brotherhoods created around Marabouts, Islam's saints. Yet, the repertoire also comprises secular pieces, notably performed at wedding or baptism celebrations. Originated in age-old musical traditions, the gasba flutes recorded here —whether they accompany songs or are themselves accompanied by bendir frame-drums— are fascinating, with their beautiful, slightly plaintive tone colour and the jolly fervour of these musicians.

'To sing is to seek oneself, and in seeking oneself, one finds God. To find God is to find oneself; in finding oneself, one loses oneself in Him, in the Breath of God, and comes at last upon the ultimate truth.' This text, which can be found on the back of Hassan Haffar's CD cover, expresses exactly what the muezzin of the great mosque in Aleppo , Syria means: to find truth through song. The muezzin Hassan Haffar is an expert in his field, but also a storyteller and poet. His exceptional voice has brought him fame, not only in his native Aleppo , but also internationally, as can be seen by the success of his CD Chants d'extase en Islam. Although he is regularly invited abroad with the Munshed Ensemble of Aleppo (the term munshed meaning specialists in songs of praise, particularly religious ones), he prefers not to travel a great deal and his performances are infrequent. His presence, therefore, at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music with the Munshed Ensemble and in the company of Omar Sermini, another great voice from Aleppo , is a rare treat. The public will be able to appreciate the immense talent of these singers, who will be presenting, amongst other titles, Le Sceau des Prophètes, Savoir et Piété, Mélodies du Paradis, Jardin d'Eden, Joie Profonde and Là où tu seras.

"During the 1950s and 1960s Umm Kulthum expanded her role in Egyptian public life. She granted more interviews during which she spoke about her life, repeatedly identifying herself as a villager, a fallahah or peasant, who shared a cultural background and essential values with the majority of the Egyptian populace. Her interviews were full of stories of her family, her neighbors, and the familial qualities of village life.
She cultivated the position of spokeswoman for various causes. She advocated governmental support of Arabic music and musicians, she endowed a charitable foundation and, most importantly, after the Egyptian defeat in the 1967 war, she began a series of domestic and international concerts for Egypt. She travelled throughout Egypt and the Arab world, collecting contributions and donating the proceeds of her performances to the government of Egypt. These concerts were much publicized and took on the character of state visits. Umm Kulthum was entertained by heads of state, she toured cultural monuments, and, in interviews, repeated her views concerning the importance of support for indigenous Arab culture. More than a musician, she became 'the voice and face of Egypt'."

HEREПереслать - Anouar Brahem - Thimar
The oud is an ancient short-necked, plucked Arabic instrument. On Thimar, East meets West with oud instrumentalist Anouar Brahem along with jazz masters, saxophonist/bass clarinetist John Surman and bassist Dave Holland. The opener, "Badhra," commences with Surman's light as a feather soprano work while Holland and Brahem successively join the festivities as if they were doing one of those "let's introduce the band" exercises. "Taiwin" leans toward the Arabic end of the spectrum as Holland and Brahem perform Middle Eastern unison lines. Holland's rich, exuberant sound provides a huge bottom for Surman and Brahem while also providing tonal color and rhythmic balance. This attribute serves as an interesting contrast to Brahem's oud. "Mazad" features some extended ensemble work from the Trio. The muscular rhythmic pulse is provided by Holland and Brahem while Surman develops attractive themes with his fluid and crystal clear soprano work. Here, Surman's phrasing and nimble tone seems angelic and my! stical.
The entire recording is amiable, wonderfully produced and absorbing. The ever present Middle Eastern feel is always an underlying factor; however, Holland did his homework to devise and implement the unorthodox pulse required to pull this off. Surman rides the top and provides the nuance and thematic movements. The entire project is captivating yet at times seems innocent and humble as if this were a spiritual exercise. Either way you look at it Thimar is entertaining and impressive. There's a lot going on here. Recommended.

Aurora Borealis. Suite for Big Band, 2002
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4Переслать - The Pulse of Africa
An interesting concept album from the folks at ARC. Pulse of Africa focuses on drumming traditions of the continent, as many albums do, but there's a catch. Here, they not only focus on drumming, but do so to the point of exclusion of all vocals and other non-percussion instruments (marimbas are occasionally used, but sparingly). The works are completely stripped down from any full musical context and only the beat itself is left. On rare occasions, a small flute takes the place of the vocal lines, but in general it's left to the drums alone. This can work well to highlight the complexity of a number of styles (à la Master Drummers of Burundi), but at the same time it can set the album up for a fall, if the pieces chosen generally have more complexity to them, and the drums are largely the backing portions. This seems to be the case for a number of works here. As such, the album is somewhat interesting in its own right, but isn't the most energetic or even necessarily the most listenable of the multitude of African drumming albums on the market. For those who enjoy rarities, incidentally, it does include a couple of interesting works on a Zulu friction drum and a seldom-heard Venda drum. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide
