  • Abdel Halim Hafez - Aai Damait Hozen.. La
Despite a fairly short career, singer/movie-actor Hafez was one of the most influential Egyptian stars of the 1950s and '60s. His mellow, resonant voice, subtle vocal style and notably clean intonation marked him out, along with a liking for long, seemingly endless musical phrases. When Mohamed Abdel Wahhaab switched from singing to composition, he pretty much stepped into his shoes. Born in 1929, Abdel Halim studied at Cairo's Institute of Arabic Music and the Higher Institute for Theatre Music, and began his career teaching and playing oboe before taking aim at vocal stardom. His first hit came in 1951, and he soon signed a contract with Abdel Wahhaab to sing his songs and appear in his films. During the 1960s, he started to sing colloquial poetry more colorful and meaningful and nearer to popular folk song than ordinary pop songs, and his work on these lines had a significant influence on popular song in general. He cofounded a film company and the Saut el-Fann record label in the early '60s, and remained a major star until he died in 1977 of Bilharzia, which he had caught as a child and which had begun to affect him intermittently from 1955 onward. ~ John Storm Roberts, All Music Guide

  • Perez Prado - Cuban Originals
This volume of RCA's Cuban Originals series spotlights Perez Prado, and includes original recordings of classic songs like "Besame Mucho," "Peanut Vendor (El Mansiero)," "Mambo #5," "Que Rico el Mambo," "Esperame en el Cielo," and "Frenesi," all of which feature Prado's innovative arrangements and bandleading style. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

Pérez Prado may not have invented the mambo, but he invented the style of mambo most people remember. The Cuban-born Prado had his first success developing his high-octane variation on the son montuno in Mexico in 1949. His angular arrangements with chugging rhythms were too radical for the Cuban recording establishment, but not for the Mexican film industry. Prado became the musical director sought by leading producers, and his soundtracks attracted deserved attention back home--leading to a fruitful collaboration with vocalist Beny Moré. Many of the songs here bear the stamp of Prado's cinematic sweep, like "Sabor a Mi," where a picaresque muted trumpet scales peaks of throbbing brass, or the bombastic annunciation of "Besame Mucho." Because he was so ambitiously modernist, his oeuvre still sounds fresh today. A lightning-bug version of "Flight of the Bumblebee" casts off impressive solos with the nonchalance of a clown juggling while turning cartwheels. Gaudy and irresistible, these instrumentals--including two of Prado's earliest mambos--cross-pollinate swing era big band music and Afro-Cuban rhythms with the delicacy of a cymbal crash. Extra bonus: two songs prefiguring Prado's No. 1 American hit "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White." --Bob Tarte.

  • Diego el Cigala - Dos Lagrimas
In the Lagrimas Negras CD, Diego Cigala and Bebo Valdez surprised us with the fabulous fusion of Flamenco singing and Cuban jazz piano, showcasing classic boleros in a new style. Now comes Dos Lagrimas, the follow-up project that continues the format, but with another pianist who is equally adept at providing the background technique for Diego.
Why is this CD not readily available in the U.S. market? Fans of the first album are missing out on another great collection of classics in this very original style---hope to hear more from Diego El Cigala in the future.

  • Mickey Hart - Planet Drum
A dazzling all-percussion workout with plenty of muscle and deep grooves, it features many of the world musicians from At the Edge, and is loosely tied to Hart's book of the same name. ~ Bob Tarte, All Music Guide

On the heels of Mickey Hart's acclaimed Global Drum Project album comes The Mickey Hart Collection, a series focusing on landmark world music albums masterminded by the Grateful Dead percussionist. On the innovative Planet Drum album, Hart brought together Nigerian drum legend Babatunde Olatunji, Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, Nigerian talking drum ace Sikiru Adepoju, Puerto Rico's master conguero Giovanni Hidalgo, and Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira, and jazz singer Flora Purim. The album won the very first GRAMMY(tm) for world music in 1991, spent an unprecedented 26 weeks at #1 on the Billboard world music chart, and remains a world-music staple.
