Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler will be a judge on the upcoming 10th season of American Idol, filling one of the slots left open by departing judges Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara Dioguardi. The Hollywood Reporter suggested the deal between Tyler and the show was inked on Wednesday, and Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton confirmed the news today, saying, “Steven is someone who absolutely lives to be in front of an audience, and the people closest to him know how witty and entertaining he can be. I don’t know if American Idol will be rock ‘n’ roll enough for him, but it is an opportunity for millions of people to see another side of Steven Tyler.” Tyler is expected to join the show in time for its audition tour, which begins in September. Eminem’s Recovery topped the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart for a sixth week, while his duet with Rihanna, “Love the Way You Lie,” hit number one on the Hot 100 singles chart for a fifth week. The song was also number one on the Digital Songs chart, making this the first week the same song has topped both charts since February, when Ke$ha’s “TiK ToK” accomplished that feat. Other interesting chart tidbits: Katy Perry is the 10th solo female artist to concurrently place two titles in the top five of the Hot 100 as a lead artist, with “California Gurls” at number three and “Teenage Dream” at number five. Meanwhile, the YouTube sensation “Bed Intruder Song,” which features Antoine Dodson’s AutoTuned interview about the attack on his sister Kelly along with production by the Gregory Brothers, entered the chart at number 89. Ted Nugent was fined $1,750 for using illegal methods to kill a young deer on his Outdoor Channel series Spirit of the Wild earlier this year. California game wardens saw Nugent use a commercial deer bait — which is illegal in the state — and kill a spiked buck with a bow and arrow. Nugent’s attorney entered no contest pleas to the misdemeanors of baiting a deer and not acquiring an authorized signature after killing a deer. [PopEater.com]
Conan O’Brien has had Jack White perform on both versions of his talk show, and White is returning the favor by releasing a spoken-word single by O’Brien on his label Third Man Records. And They Call Me Mad? is “a hilarious improvised take on the Frankenstein legend” and features White interviewing O’Brien on its B-side. In addition to its regular release, a limited-edition version of the single will be sold at Third Man’s Nashville, TN store for $100 each; the proceeds will benefit ReTune Nashville, a charity that provides aid to uninsured musicians. Earlier this year, O’Brien and White teamed up for a live album that was also released by Third Man Records. [Pitchfork.com]

Переслать - Crush Band – Grass Widow
If you are tired of noisy, poppy, vaguely surf-y bands made up of all girls that are influenced by groups like X-Ray Spex, the Raincoats and Talulah Gosh, first you should have your head examined. Next, you should take a deep breath and listen to Grass Widow. They break from the template in ways that are hypnotic and bewitching. The trio from SF are quite poppy, it’s true. The melodies they display on their various singles and EPs, and even more so on their forthcoming (as in next week) album Past Time, are hooky but in a mysterious way. They kind of sneak up on you, beguiling you with overlapping vocal harmonies and post-punk spiky guitar/bass lines that work like the insides of a watch. Sometimes they can be a little spooky, sometimes they can thrill you with a twist or turn. Once they hook you though, you’ll stay hooked.

Jazz vocal legend Abbey Lincoln died on August 14th at age 80. Beginning her career in the ’50s as a nightclub singer, Lincoln eventually transformed herself by the mid-’60s into a progressive jazz singer/songwriter with a bent toward political and social activism. Although she never improvised vocally, her singular and precise emotional delivery of a song — with specific attention to the lyrics — was highly influential for many vocalists, including Cassandra Wilson. The National Jazz Museum in Harlem has acquired the storied Savory jazz recording collection. A large collection of live jazz performances recorded by audio engineer William Savory during the ‘30 and ’40s, the Savory collection has been rarely heard and was never released to the public. The collection sat moldering in a basement for decades until it was acquired from Savory’s heirs this spring by the National Jazz Museum. Although complex copyright issues leave the future release of the music in question, the museum has employed legendary audio engineer Herb Pomeroy to restore and digitize the music so that museum patrons can hear it.
