Bobby Hebb Sunny Singer/songwriter Bobby Hebb died on Tuesday of lung cancer at a Nashville hospital. He was 72. Best known for penning the song “Sunny,” Hebb was also one of the first African American artists to perform at The Grand Ole Opry, which he did as a member of Roy Acuff’s Smokey Mountain Boys in the early ’50s. Hebb’s own recording of “Sunny” became a hit after reaching number two on the Billboard pop charts in 1966. Many other artists covered the song over the years, including Marvin Gaye, Jose Feliciano, Frank Sinatra, and guitarist Pat Martino, which helped seal the song’s reputation as a pop and jazz standard. Hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean is expected to announce his plans to run for President of Haiti on Thursday. Best known as a founding member of the Fugees, Jean was born in Port-au-Prince and moved to Brooklyn with his family at age nine. An outspoken proponent for Haiti, he was one of the first high-profile celebrities to offer support after the country’s devastating earthquake in January. Jean has apparently filled out the necessary paperwork to run for political office and will announce his intentions this Thursday on CNN’s Larry King Live. [CNN.com]

The heavy metal group, which formed during the 1980s and single-handedly pioneered the Japanese glam-metal movement known as “visual kei,” is currently putting the finishing touches on a new album. Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell recently talked with Yoshiki about X Japan’s history. [SunTimes.com]

Brian Eno will release his next album through Warp Records, the label that pioneered UK techno. Although Eno and Warp remain tight-lipped about the project, some details can be gleaned from a blog post written by guitarist Leo Abrahams, who says the album is a collaborative project between himself, Eno and classical composer Jon Hopkins. • Video Jams Two for Tuesday – New Order

Coming in to work I heard New Order’s “Round & Round” on the weird and awesome radio station that plays No Doubt back to back with Usher, old Prince next to Drake, and well, New Order! Hearing the song out of context I remembered why I love the group so much. The way they blended clunky new wave synths, propulsive rhythms, and incredibly hooky tunes with Hooky’s brilliant basslines and Barney’s oddly emotional lyrics and endearingly wimpy vocals always hits my heart just the right way every time. (That’s the two-second version — if you want the two-hour version, call me at 1-800- NEW-ORDR.) The band’s videos were often kind of lame, so I went deeper and dug up some interesting footage.

The first is of the band in 1985 performing “The Perfect Kiss” live in the studio. It’s nine plus minutes of the best things about the 80s rolled up into one great clip.

Next we have the band on Top of the Pops miming(?) to “Round and Round” and having a load of fun doing it. Check out Barney’s rings and Stephen’s shirt, they sure weren’t feeling very dour that day. (You’ll need to crank the volume on this one)

Breaking the rules of Two for Tuesday (and why not, really?), we have the band sweating through a raw and thrilling version of “Ceremony” recorded in NYC during 1981.

And finally, the band in the studio wearing some fine shorts and ripping off an incendiary version of “Age of Consent.”
