- News Roundup: 8/5/2010
Avenged Sevenfold scored their first number one album this week with Nightmare, uprooting Eminem’s Recovery from its five-week perch atop the Billboard 200 chart. The band’s first album since the death of drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan in 2009, Nightmare sold 163,000 copies in its first week, significantly more than the 94,000 managed by the band’s self-titled 2007 effort. Recovery claimed the number two spot, selling just 4,000 copies less than Nightmare. This is the first time since February that only one new album has debuted in the Top 10. However, Best Coast’s Crazy For You cracked the Top 40, coming in at number 36 with approximately 10,000 copies sold. [RollingStone.com]
The Beach Boys are suing Katy Perry over her hit single “California Gurls.” The band’s label, Rondor Records, claims the Beach Boys should be given a writing credit on Perry’s song because Snoop Dogg raps “I wish they could all be California girls” — a lyric from the band’s 1965 hit. Rondor is also seeking a portion of the song’s royalties. [Gigwise.com]
Weezer is now a truly indie-rock band: Having ended their contract with Geffen, the group will release their new album Hurley on September 14 via Epitaph Records. [Pitchfork.com]
Lil Wayne protégé Nicki Minaj announced her debut album will be called Pink Friday via a video where she adopts a British accent, talks to stuffed monkeys and yells “it’s Barbie, bitch!” The album will be out November 23. [Billboard.com]
While American Idol’s new judges remain a mystery, former executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is returning — and he wants to bring back Paula Abdul. He’d also like to see the show return its focus to the contestants: “Where are these kids? That has got to be the priority, more than anything. More than the judges’ panel.” [MTV.com]
Dr. Dre talked with Vibe Magazine about some of his upcoming projects, including the long-awaited Detox and instrumental hip-hop album inspired by the planets. [Vibe.com]
If you think the festival season is winding down, think again: The lineup for Austin, TX’s Fun Fun Fun Fest was announced and it lives up to its name, with Devo, MGMT, Slick Rick, Deerhunter, the Hold Steady, the Gories and RJD2 among the many acts appearing at the newly expanded three-day fest. Переслать - Free Mixtapes for All!
If you love free stuff, you really should consider becoming a hip-hop aficionado (if you aren’t already). The flood of free mixtapes is truly inspiring and unique to the style — and best of all, everyone does it. From giants like Weezy to up-and-comers like Freddie Gibbs, every week is jam-packed with free jams. This week there’s a bunch of extra-good stuff floating around that you need to jump on now before it disappears….
Wale – More About Nothing
Wale boosted his profile about 100% with his 2008 mixtape, the Seinfeld-sampling masterpiece The Mixtape About Nothing. This new set follows the same basic formula but throws in some added bitterness about how nobody bought his actual album Attention Deficit last year. I mean, you should have…it was pretty damn good.J. Dilla – Donut Shop

Finally, some advance hype for his allegedly soon-to-be-released new record The R.E.D. Album….Exile – Radio Bonus
L.A. DJ Exile created something of an underground hip-hop masterpiece with his 2009 record Radio, sampling vocals and musical snippets from the radio and weaving it into an incredibly fun and masterful experience. There’s an album of Radio remixes coming out next week called AM/FM and also this mixtape of cuts that didn’t quite make the cut.Freddie Gibbs – Str8 Killa No Filla
Gibbs can’t seem to stop dropping mixtapes. At least he waited a whole week before releasing this expanded version of his official EP Str8 Killa!Переслать
