  • Acoustic Africa
On Acoustic Africa, you'll discover gentle folk songs from Senegal, a protest song from South Africa, blues-tinged ballads from Mali and much more. The performers on this album are social activists, building awareness of the current conditions in Africa that affect the region and the world. They sing of love and faith, pain and oppression, and their ability to unite people.

Vusi Mahlasela is an active social commentator who often addresses issues of social and political significance in his homeland. His gripping lyrics and lovely melodies on "Basimanyana" demonstrate why Mahlasela is also a leading figure in the contemporary South African music scene.

One of Africa's most world-renowned performers, Habib Koité has shared the stage with some of the world's best-known artists. On the track "Baro," Koité's wistful vocals with swirling rhythms and intertwined harmonies demonstrate his distinctive sound. Koité's music video for "Wari" is a bonus enhancement on the CD, as well as one of Koité's best-loved songs.

Other artists of note include Diogal Sakho, Laye Sow, Angelique Kidjo, and Eneida Marta.

Later this fall Putumayo will translate the experience of the Acoustic Africa collection into a live performance setting, bringing together three of the African continent's most gifted singer-songwriters on one stage. The Putumayo Presents: Acoustic Africa Concert Tour featuring Acoustic Africa artists Habib Koité from Mali, Vusi Mahlasela from South Africa and Dobet Gnahoré from Ivory Coast will travel to more than 40 cities in North America and Europe, giving audiences a rare and unique opportunity to experience first-hand the dynamic performances of these truly enigmatic musicians.

This has to be one of the most serene, sweetest, tuneful compilations to appear for ages. Compilations can sometimes seem random or, worse, sequenced without a thought for changes in rhythm and pace. But Putumayo's selection of 12 tracks from 9 countries (only Mali and Guinea-Bissau get two outings) is a savvy tour of the continent which balances the distinctiveness of each contribution with a simple, unifying theme: the rootsy sound of African music when played free of electrical appliances.

Many of these artists - Habib Koité , Vusi Mahlasela, Dobet Gnahoré - have explored synthesised sounds and hi-tech studio technologies in the past, and are now revisiting their origins by paring things down and allowing their instruments to breathe again.

All the songs are winners, but "Antonia" by Manecas Costa stands out for its complex meld of native African and imported Lusitanian influences and for Costa's stirring voice. That's the penultimate track and the final song, Fanta Bourama by Mali's Djelimady Tounkara, is also a gentle, reflective stunner. So let this one play right to the end.

  • Orchestre National De Jazz - Charmediterraneen
For the first time under the direction of a foreigner, Paolo Damiani, the French orchestra explores themes related to the Mediterranean area. With the help of special guests Anouar Brahem and Gianluigi Trovesi, the Italian musical director offers musical landscapes that encompass the various aspects of the region. The album opens with a suite penned by Trovesi, which digs deep into the Italian musical tradition, but also incorporates more recent influences from the Middle East and Africa. With the brass instruments in the forefront, it is definitely the most colorful and animated segment of the disc. François Jeanneau takes the relay with another suite that brings the music back into jazz territory while paying tribute to the long French tradition of jazz violin. The saxophonist successfully blends the saxophones with the string and brass sections, producing a unique and rich texture. Brahem's two-part composition "Artefact" slows down the pace and sets a more reflective mood. Not surprisingly, the music has a strong Middle Eastern flavor. Ironically, the musical director's contributions featured at the end of the program pale in comparison and sound somewhat conventional. The pace is similar to Brahem's piece, which might suggest that the music could have been better sequenced. "Argentiera" features some thoughtful playing, but the title track is lackluster save for a forceful solo by Trovesi. This is a disappointment for an otherwise very enjoyable outing adequately dominated by the voice of the soprano saxophone. ~ Alain Drouot, All Music Guide
