  • American Blues
Putumayo is to be congratulated for this roundup of, as they call them, "America's greatest contemporary blues artists." That statement is always going to be up for debate, but kudos for stepping beyond the big names to highlight some lesser-known, but equally important, talent. Arthur Adams, for example, has a wonderful voice that he uses smoothly on "Get Next to Me" (although B.B. King's solo fires the piece to a higher level). And some of the acoustic tracks are absolute joys, like Chris Thomas King's "Why Blues?" It would have been nice to have heard something more recent from Taj Mahal's extensive catalog than "Cakewalk into Town," which almost qualifies as vintage -- but it's still majestic. Ruth Brown, Sugar Pie DeSanto, and Susan Tedeschi show that women get the blues too, with Tedeschi firing off some stinging guitar. Whether Solomon Burke really qualifies as a blues singer is debatable -- to many he'll always be one of soul's kings -- but his voice remains an impressive vehicle. However, it's good to see Sunpie Barnes and Henry Gray get exposure. Perhaps next time they can extend their range to include people like Otis Taylor who are reinventing the meaning of the blues. But for now, this is a good job. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide

  • Mila na Utamaduni - Spices of Zanzibar
    Mila na Utamaduni
    Spices of Zanzibar, 1986
The island of Zanzibar, steeped in legend, conjures up endless images of oriental mystery. For more than a thousand years, it has been an important waystation on international trading routes and a meltingpot of African, Asian and Oriental cultures. It is this rich cultural diversity that lends the unique and enthralling music of the taarab orchestras its fascination. The sound of these wonderful melodies taps a wellspring of yearning, transporting the listener to the rolling waves of the Indian ocean, where the triangular sail of a dhow glints white in the sunlight, like the crystalline notes of the kanun zither floating on the groundswell of violin, cello and double bass. The nai flute hovers over the violins like a warm tropical breeze. A distinctly African touch is added by the nightingale voices of the singers and the polyphonic women´s choir. Subtle rhythms on dumbak and bongos accompany the soli on oud lute and accordion.
Mila na Utamaduni is one of the two leading ensembles that have made their distinctive mark on the sound of Zanzibar taarab music. Founded back in 1958, Mila na Utamaduni is the island´s most popular taarab orchestra today. The Network team — Swahili music expert Werner Graebner, sound engineer Bernhard Ramroth (acclaimed for his Madagscar recordings "A World Out of Time") and Christian Scholze — recorded this album in Zanzibar. The 35 musicians of Mila na Utamaduni went enthusiastically about developing new arrangements, from romantic ballads of lyrical poetry to instrumental improvisations and light-hearted wedding music (actually the single most important performance context for taarab), in which the African sound of the women´s choir enters into a dialogue with the strings and plucked instruments. This meeting of Arabia, Asia and Africa documents the vibrant sprectrum of a continent whose music still remains largely untapped in the west.

  • Americana
At the heart of this album are contemporary singer-songwriters who have honed their craft by exploring the country's rural traditions. Texas native Terri Hendrix has become one of the folk world's most endearing voices and delivers the heartwarming "Prayer for My Friends," while the eclectic Josh Ritter offers a tribute to the city of "Harrisburg." RobinElla was trained in the church before launching into the public eye, while Ruthie Foster's 2002 debut earned her comparisons to Tracy Chapman, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin. Robert Earl Keen, one of the leading stars of the movement, and Old Crow Medicine Show give a nod to America's fascination with transportation on "Ride" and "Wagon Wheel" respectively. The Little Willies, a group that includes Grammy-award winners Norah Jones contributes "It's Not You, It's Me" is taken. The development of Americana has also allowed artists who may have been considered supporting musicians to take center stage. Banjo virtuoso Alison Brown began her career as a member of Alison Krauss' Union Station before pursuing a successful solo career that earned her a Grammy in 2000. Fiddler Carrie Rodriguez's talents captured the attention of Texas legend Chip Taylor and together they have received accolades from the Americana music community. Other relative newcomers, including Kevin Kerby of Mulehead and Eliza Lynn, have found a home within Americana's walls. Kevin recorded "Frankie Lee" in 2005, while Eliza Lynn contributes the unreleased but aptly titled "Sing a New Song."
