- Ross Daly - Djamchid Cherimani - Irshad Khan - Cross Current
A master multi-instrumentalist himself, Ross Daly has repeatedly teamed with master musicians from all over the world working within the musical discipline of the Eastern traditions while at the same time freely exploring new forms and creative improvisation. A virtouoso of Eastern musical instruments, he plays the Cretan lyra, Afghan rabab, laouto, kemence, sarangi, oud, saz and tanbur. A unique composer, Ross Daly, builds his compositions around the subtle but powerful interaction between the sound textures of the various traditions which he has studied. His close personal relationship with the musicians he works with is of paramount interest to Ross Daly himself as he believes that it is this inner connection which brings music alive. The unique sound of his music reflects his personal philosophy, influenced by the Sufi tradition which stresses the sacred nature of music itself, the enormous power contained within it, and the necessity for those who concern themselves with it to unreservedly and selflessly give themselves to it. This process results in an experience of music of a transcendental and spiritual nature, equally shared by musicians and audience alike, which has nothing to do with the fashions of "World Music" or "Ethnic". Ross Daly's music provides something that is increasingly difficult to find in modern times: a sense of continuity and unity. Sharing in the essence of a music that really has no physical boundaries is a magical experience that stands outside of time and space, connecting the natural flow of ancient traditions with the most complex needs of today's audiences.
Djmachid Chemirani learned to play in Iran with the great zarb master, Hossein Teherani, whose revolutionary work changed the zarb from an accompaniment to a solo instrument. Recognised himself as a master of the classical school, Djamchid Chemirani was also seen as a modernist, open to new ideas and styles.
Irshad Hussain Khan was a well respected tabla player and his playing was characterized by technical virtuosity and tonal quality. He died in Amsterdam on March 5th 2003, at the age of 29. His health had been declining for a couple of years and he died of total exhaustion.
Irshad stemmed from a long line of Indian musicians (the Jaipur Gharana). His father Ustad Zamir Ahmad Khan, also a tabla player, introduced him to the tabla at the age of three. Irshad's approach was strongly based on the old styles and the traditional repertoire, but he combined this with much of his own improvisational creativity. As a very promising tabla player of the younger generation he has had the opportunity to accompany many great musicians of Indian classical music and as he was always open for new possibilities and combinations with different musicians, styles and traditions he performed with many well-known musicians in the fields of jazz and worldwide music traditions such as: Theo Loevendie, Joachim Kühn, David Vriessen, Philip Catherine, Ross Daly, and with percussionists like the Iranian zarb maestro Djamchid Chemirani and the African master drummers Fodé Youla, Adama Dramé, Omar Diabaté and Alfa Camara.

Tradition vs. innovation - Johan Sara Jr. renews Sami chanting tradition
Johan Sara Jr.'s unique blend of traditional Sami joik and contemporary elements has solidified his position as a vital, refreshing and genre-defying innovator.
"Even if joik is an ancient song tradition, there's innovation and development within the genre and I've found my niche by combining traditional joik with a contemporary form of expression, " says Sara Jr.
Johan Sara Jr, who was born in Kautokeino, Finnmark in 1963, enjoys a career as a central composer, producer, teacher, arranger, actor and performer of contemporary Sami music. The ancient Sami joik song tradition played a central role in his upbringing, but Sara Jr. was not to join the ranks of performers until he had reached a certain age: "I studied classical guitar at the regional Music Conservatory for three years. During my studies, I decided to take up joiking when I graduated - I wanted joik to be made available to a new and wider audience."
Johan Sara Jr. has devoted much time to develop his own voice and form of expression. His guitar chops have suffered under his devotion to the renewal of ancient Sami chanting – Sara Jr. has barely touched his six-string since he began his introspective foray into his musical roots. "It took me six years to find and develop an individual form of vocal methodology that I could integrate into joik. I would study singing for three years and took classes that focused on various breathing techniques. Gradually, I managed to develop what I feel is a methodology that's well applicable to joik. The most vital factor is to distance oneself from the Western-European tradition that's mainly based on skull resonance and timbre, and instead focus on applying the whole body as a soundboard."
In many ways, Johan Sara Jr.'s search for his own form of expression has been an inward journey, a search for his own voice and a process that has seen the performer confronting his own identity while digging further into his own persona and cultural references. "I've been digging into myself, and through that process I've been able to reach deeper into the matter. My approach to singing brings in new respiratory patterns that differ from the norm within the European sonorous tradition. The midriff plays a vital role and in order to bring out the full bodily soundboard-timbre, one must employ a wide range of activities that range from gymnastics and stretching to breathing exercises and relaxation techniques."
Johan Sara Jr. teaches joik at the Sami University College in Kautokeino and is also frequently employed as a producer, composer, arranger, lecturer, performer and actor on the Sami cultural scene. Sara Jr. has composed works for TV, radio, museums, marching and wind bands, theatre as well as chamber music pieces. He has also been commissioned to produce and compose installation works such as the EXPO 2000 work "Jienat". Sara Jr. was introduced to a wider international audience in 2000 when he contributed to the Swedish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Johan Sara Jr.'s latest release, "Boska" has already manifested itself as one of the strongest Sami albums that have been released in recent years. With solid assistance from a competent crew of Norwegian musicians, Sara Jr. has created a revitalising album that fuses contemporary influences with the ancient joik tradition. Elements derived from electronica, jazz, world-music as well as pop and rock are mated with Sara Jr's inimitable vocal style, creating a wholesome and progressive album of grand proportions. The dynamic range showcased on "Boska" is wide, ranging from raw and intense passages to quiet moments of beauty. Underpinning the diverse and varied tunes is Sara's powerful and near hypnotic voice that's given a natural and central place in the mix. Exploratory improvisation is contrasted by the carefully programmed loops and the droning vocals, resulting in some quite untraditional arrangements. To sum it up: "Boska" is a must-listen.
Sara Jr's focus on creating new forms of expression within an ancient tradition has not been without conflicts: "Of course, carrying on a tradition while simultaneously creating new forms of expression can lead to musical as well as ideological conflicts. In retrospect, one can conclude that many experiments weren't successful, but then again one can't rule out a project before one has even tried to complete it. Over time, one builds up a certain amount of experience, enabling me to predict what will work out and what will not."

Переслать - Kudsi Erguner - Islam Blues
Along with his brother, Suleyman, Kudsi Erguner is one of the top players of the ney, a Turkish reed flute. In addition to his own recordings, Erguner has performed with Peter Gabriel, Maurice Bejart, Peter Brook, Georges Aperghis, Didier Lockwood and Michel Portal. His compositions and collaborations have been heard in the films, The Last Temptation Of Christ and Meetings With Remarkable Men, theater piece and film, Mahabharata, and ballets, Le Voyage Nocturne and Neva. Erguner's band, The Kudsi Erguner Ensemble, was formed in 1988, as Fasi, with the goal of preserving the classical music of the sixteenth century Ottomon Empire.
Erguner hails from a musical family. His father, Ulvi Erguner, and garndfather, Suleyman Erguner, were well known players of the ney. In addition to what he learned from his father and grandfather, Erguner learned from the older musicians who often visited his childhood home. Erguner's knowledge of Turkish classical music was enhanced through his studies of the Sufi-brotherhoods.
Launching his musical career, in 1969, as a member of the Istanbul Radio Orchestra, Erguner moved to Paris, six years later, to study architecture and musicology. The following year, he worked on Peter Brook's movie, Meetings With Remarkable Men, filmed on location in Afghanistan. Erguner later renewed his collaboration with Brook, composing and performing the score for a theater piece and film, Mahabharata.
After conducting research in Turkey, through a grant from UNESCO, in 1980, Erguner returned to Paris and founded Mevlani, an institute for the study of the classical music and teachings of the Sufis. Between 1986 and 1987, Erguner spent lengthy periods in Pakistan recording and documenting traditional music for Radio France and France Musique. In late-1987, Erguner performed a concert of Ottoman music at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
In 1988, Erguner collaborated with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack of The Last Temptation Of Christ. The same year, he recorded an album with his brother, The Mystic Flutes Of Sufi, featuring preludes to ceremonies of the Whirling Dervishes. Kudsi and renewed their partnership in 1990, releasing a second album together, Sufi Music Of Turkey. The following year, Erguner released three albums -- Turquie Musique Soufi, with Ilahi and Nefes N. Uzel, Oriental Dreams, with Mahmoud Tebrizizadeh, and, together with thee Kudsi Erguner Ensemble, was one of several artists featured on Gazel: Classical Sufi Music Of The Ottomon Empire. In 1997, Erguner joined with Derya Turkan to record, Chemins. Two years later, he formed the Kudsi Erguner Sufi-Jazz Project, with Christof Lauer, Michel Godard and Marc Nauseef, and recorded, Ottomania. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Переслать - Ross Daly - Naghma
This "Voyage en Orient" is a coming together of talented and passionate musicians who interpret music from traditions as distant and diverse as the Himalayas and Greece, a passage through India, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey.
In this journey one can come to discover some of the many sounds, rhythms, moods and colours that can be found along the way: the subtle, refined atmosphere of the Mogul Courts of Northern India, the river songs of Bengal, the echoes from the heights of the Himalayas through the valleys of Kashmir and Afghanistan, the intimacy and elegance of Persian art music, the rich Ottoman culture and colourful tradional music of Turkey and finally the wonderful rhythmic vitality of Cretan dances.
Ross Daly's journey in the music of the world is inseparable from the course of his life. Of Irish descent, born in England, he travelled as a child with his family around the world and soon his deep interest in music emerged. His first instrument was the cello, which he studied in his childhood years in America. He later began studying the classical guitar in Japan at the age of eleven. The late sixties found him in San Francisco, where having experienced both the classical discipline and the air of freedom and experimentation of the time, he first encountered Eastern musical traditions which completely changed his life. Of particular interest to him was Indian Classical music which was destined to be the first non-western tradition that he actively studied. The ensuing years found him travelling extensively studying a variety of instruments and traditions. At that time his main emphasis was on Indian and Afghani music. In 1975 he travelled to Crete which he had previously visited for a short time in 1970 and 1972 where he had been greatly impressed by the lyra (a small pear-shaped upright fiddle which is the primary folk instrument of the island). After a six month period of wandering from village to village encountering local musicians, He settled in the town of Hania on the west of the island and began studying the Cretan Lyra with its great master Kostas Mountakis. This apprenticeship was to last for many years. During this same time he frequently visited Turkey where he studied Ottoman classical music as well as Turkish folk music. After many years of intensive training in a variety of musical traditions, Ross Daly turned his attention largely to composition drawing heavily on the various sources that he had studied. Today he has released more than twenty five albums of his own compositions as well as of his own versions of traditional melodies that he collected during his travels. The island of Crete in Greece still provides a base for his personal and musical research as he travels around the world performing his music. A master multi-instrumentalist himself, Ross Daly has repeatedly teamed with master musicians from all over the world working within the musical discipline of the Eastern traditions while at the same time freely exploring new forms and creative improvisation. A virtuoso of Eastern musical instruments, he plays the Cretan lyra, Afghan rabab, tarhu, laouto, kemence, oud, saz and tanbur. Sharing in the essence of a music that really has no physical boundaries is a magical experience that stands outside of time and space, connecting the natural flow of ancient traditions with the most complex needs of today's audiences. He has collaborated with some of the most important musicians from all over the world such as: Habil Aliev, Djamchid Chemirani, Omer Erdogdular, Munir Bashir, Kostas Mountakis, Nikos Xylouris, Huun Huur Tu, Stelios Foustalierakis, Dhruba Ghosh, Rakesh Chaurasia, Shubankar Bannerjee, Vassilis Soukas, Ballake Sissoko, Mehmet Erenler, Talip Ozkan, Matthew Barley, Hossein Omoumi, Mohammad Rahim Khushnawaz, Khaled & Hossein Arman, Necati Celik, Goksel Baktagir, Derya Turkan, Georgi Petrov, Naseer Shamma and many more. Apart from his intense concert activity in festivals all over the world with his group Labyrinth, which he established in 1982, Daly is particularly known for the creation and artistic direction of large multi-ethnic music groups with the participation of musicians coming from many different traditions and for his rich and impressive compositions and orchestrations that emerge from the collaborations of all these musicians. Some of the most well known projects of this nature are IRIS (Greece, India, Iran) and The White Dragon (Tuva, Iran, Greece). In Summer 2004 he was the artistic director of the cultural program of the Olympic Games for the Olympic city of Heraklion on the island of Crete, titled "Crete, Music Crossroads". He organized and artistically supervised 15 concerts with the participation of 300 musicians from all over the world. Amongst others there were musicians of international fame as : Jordi Savall, Eduardo Niebla, Huun Huur Tu, Habil Aliev, Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan, Mohammad Rahim Khushnawaz, Trio Chemirani, Adel Selameh and many others. Since 2003 he is the artistic director of the Musical Workshop Labyrinth www.labyrinthmusic.gr, in the village of Houdetsi in the Heraklion province of Crete in Greece, where concerts, seminars and master classes are organized every summer. Each year hundreds of students from all continents arrive in Houdetsi in order to study with some of the most renowned teachers of traditional music. Also Ross Daly's impressive collection of more than 200 instruments which he has collected over the years during his travelling is permanently on exhibition in the building of Labyrinth.
