Because there is so much lazy, careless, appallingly sloppy A&R in the recording industry, A&R people who do their job well should always be applauded. And when it comes to A&R, Putumayo has been thoughtful and intelligent more often than not. Putumayo's A&R people usually do a lot of hard thinking when they assemble a compilation, which is why world music enthusiasts hold the company in such high regard. A good example of Putumayo's thoughtfulness is Euro Lounge, which takes a look at the more melodic world/electronica experimentation that has been coming from Europe. Some world/electronica fusion can be forceful, abrasive, dissonant, and hyper, but Euro Lounge doesn't get into any of Europe's rave-friendly techno/world sounds. This compilation focuses primarily on Europe's more melodic, relaxed world/club fare -- in other words, chill-out grooves for club hounds who are into world music. And in the 21st century, that could be anything from downtempo mixed with Brazilian music to trip-hop/Middle Eastern hybrids. Most of the artists on Euro Lounge come from various European countries, including Italy (Daniele Silvestri, Bandabardo, Gabin, S-Tone Inc.), Belgium (Gare du Nord), and Spain (Mastretta). But their influences aren't strictly European. Gabin, for example, brings a Brazilian influence to "Sweet Sadness," while S-Tone Inc. is very Indian-influenced on "Limbe." And some of the artists on Euro Lounge don't actually live in Europe. Ilhan Ersahin, for example, is a part-Turkish, part-Swedish jazz saxophonist who was born in Stockholm but now lives in New York. The John Coltrane-influenced Ersahin has recorded some memorable post-bop albums, but "Girl" isn't jazz -- it's an enjoyably moody blend of downtempo and Turkish pop. Full of surprises, Euro Lounge is yet another appealing example of the sort of hard thinking that usually goes into Putumayo's compilations. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

German violinist. Her gifts as pianist and violinist were clear at an early age. Admired by Karajan when she played at Lucerne in 1976, she made her Salzburg Festival début when she was 14 and also her London début, playing first in the USA in 1980. She is noted for her shapely playing and warm tone in the standard repertory and has given premières of works by Lutosławski and others.
To capture the brilliant partnership between violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and pianist Lambert Orkis, one only has to look to their riveting recording of Beethoven's Violin Sonatas. Over the course of those four CDs, the pair revealed themselves to be a lively, sympathetic team. The same description could be used for this single-CD recital, featuring four very different 20th-century compositions from four very different composers. The spiky nature and high notes of Prokofiev's Sonata stand in direct contrast with George Crumb's Four Nocturnes, a fragmented but short sonic journey filled with subtle harmonics and stark, hallucinogenic movements. Moving to Webern's Four Pieces, Mutter and Orkis literally define the essence of collaboration--there is no "star" here, other than the composer's somber work. The pair end the recital on its most gorgeous note: Respighi's Sonata for Violin and Piano in B minor. The richly lyrical, Romantic composition is the perfect showcase for the duo, and they deliver an electrifying performance. While Webern and Crumb may be acquired tastes, the Respighi piece is something everyone will love, filled with beautiful, expressive singing lines. These are great performances--Mutter's tone is impeccable and Orkis showcases his ever-increasing versatility. Great recorded sound, too. --Jason Verlinde

In the hope of maintaining our Iraqi musical folklore which is represented by Iraqi Maqam, this style which I have learned and inherited from greatest teachers Munir Bashir, Shaubi Ibrahim, Yousif Omar. with whom I had worked for a period regarded as the richest period of my artistic career. In addition, work with the Iraqi Musical Heritage Group, which had been founded by the greatest artist Munir Bashir, made me aware of the importance of continuing and spreading this folklore throughout the world since, this folklore represents the most tremendous and ancient humanitarian civilization & that is the civilization of Mesopotamia. Regretfully, this choir mentioned above had disappeared so I worked hard to found The Iraqi Maqam Ensemble with a group of the best & most experienced artists together with the greatest female voice who uniquely performs this style, Mrs Farida Mohammad Ali, so that the lady of Iraqi Maqam together with The Iraqi Maqam Ensemble are the voice of Mesopotamia to the world. - Mohammad H. The Iraqi Maqam Ensemble was founded in 1989 in Baghdad By Mohammad H.Gomar to continuation of The Iraqi Musical Heritage Group which was initiated in 1973 by the prominent Lute professor Munir Bashir.
The group of Maqam has met its objective to revive the Iraqi Maqam and other kinds of Iraqi musical heritage and spread it via Arabic and international festivals the voice of Farida Mohammad Ali, the maqam singer
The ensemble members had all finished their studies in the Musical Institute & Academy of Fine Arts in Iraq.
The group is considered to be one the most important in Iraq in reviving the Iraqi Maqam. It has participated in a large number of music festivals and was considered to be one of the best 14 groups in the world by the jury of the festival WOMEX2001 which took place in Rotterdam in Holland. Rotterdam was chosen as the cultural capital of Europe for the year 2001. The name of the group of Iraqi Maqam figures in the book of the festival in page 103 and in page 150.

Their Star Shall Never Fade
Jewish brothers born in Kuwait, make their name in Iraq, then settle in Israel, and along the way great a unique Arabic music for violin and ud. The brothers Saleh (1908-1986) and Daoud (1910-1976) El-Kuwaiti wrote, composed and played with the biggest Arab singers and musicians, such as Salima Mourad, Oum Kolthoum and Muhammad Abed-el Wahab and were among King Faisal's favourite entertainers, performing for him and composing music for various formal events like the King's coronation. This is a collection of rare recordings (double CD), constituting the musical heritage of the Iraqi community in Israel and worldwide. An important document and great music, too.
Saleh Al-Kuwaity's musical legacy is revived as his centenary is celebrated
SALEH Al-Kuwaity, one of the greatest figures in 20th century Iraqi and Arab music, was born in 1908 to a family of Iraqi Jews living in Kuwait. Saleh and his brother Daoud became famous musicians in Iraq and beyond, but their musical careers were disrupted when they left for Israel in 1951.
"When their plane took off into the Baghdad skies, it signaled for Saleh and Daoud Al-Kuwaity the end of their rise and the beginning of their decline," says Saleh's son Shlomo.
However, the songs of Saleh Al-Kuwaity remained popular in Iraq, Kuwait and beyond, and there is today a growing appreciation of his musical legacy. This was shown by the enthusiastic reaction to the 18-track double CD "Daoud & Saleh Al-Kuwaity: Their Star Shall Never Fade" produced two years ago by Shlomo and other family members.
"The album was sent, among others, to some prominent Arab figures around the world and in Kuwait and Iraq in particular," says Shlomo. "We were very surprised at the positive responses from the Kuwaiti, Saudi, Lebanese and Iraqi press, and also from a whole host of online websites which specialize in Arabic music."
A further sign of the revival of interest in the Al-Kuwaity brothers was the holding in December of a special day at the Brunei Gallery of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London University, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Saleh, who died in 1986.
An organizer of the event, the London-based Iraqi oud master Ahmed Mukhtar, paid tribute to "the genius of Saleh Al-Kuwaity" who "created new styles of Iraqi maqam music and freed the maqam from its restrictions and mixed some of it with urban music." The finale of the day was a packed-out concert by Iraqi musicians which opened with Mukhtar's performance of variations on several of Saleh Al-Kuwaity's compositions.
The Iraqi singer Ismail Fadhel, who lives in Australia, delivered in rousing style a succession of Al-Kuwaity songs, accompanied by the London-based violinist Taher Barakat and two musicians living in the Netherlands: qanoun player Jamil Al-Assadi and percussionist Ali Khafaji. The concert was a joyous occasion, with the audience clapping, singing and at times dancing along.
In his welcoming speech at the concert, Mukhtar said: "We commemorate Saleh Al-Kuwaity as a person of artistic value not as Iraqi or Kuwaiti, but as of great human value. He managed with his rich compositions to establish some very valuable music in the area, and in particular for the Iraqi people: all the Iraqis tend to sing his songs, and they are still attached to his classical compositions."
At the concert Mukhtar presented a 100th anniversary award to Shlomo Al-Kuwaity, who later described the celebration of his father's music as "incredibly exciting. I was totally surprised and touched to see that he is still present in people's hearts."
He added: "For our family and for me, of course it was a great honor. But most important for us is restoring his place in the history of Arab music. We think he deserves it. The response of the audience was overwhelming and I felt at home." He added: "I hope that a door has been opened without differences of religion and without politics. Just for the Arts!"
As Shlomo recounted in his address at the centenary day, the musical gifts of Saleh and Daoud became apparent after an uncle returned from a business trip to India with a violin for Saleh and an oud for Daoud, two years his junior. In lessons with the Kuwaiti musician Khaled Al-Baker they mastered the elements of Kuwaiti, Bahraini, Yemeni and Hijazi music and song.
They became famed for their performances at gatherings of dignitaries. In the late 1920s a club owner in Basra invited the brothers to work at his club, where they started to perform with the legendary maqam singer, Muhammad Al-Qubbanji.
They moved to Baghdad in 1930 and worked in the Malha el-Hilil club accompanying the famous Jewish singer Selima Murad, wife of fellow vocalist Nazem Al-Ghazli. She asked Saleh to write songs for her, the first of which was "Qalbak Sakhr Jalmoud"("Your Heart is Rock Hard").
Over the next two decades Saleh Al-Kuwaity was the pre-eminent song writer in Iraq, writing songs for stars such as Zakiya George, Munira Al-Hawazwaz. Afifa Iskander and Zohour Hussein. When the great Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum toured Iraq in 1931, Saleh taught her "Qalbak Sakhr Jalmoud". Another towering Egyptian performer, the singer and composer Mohammed Abdel Wahab made trips to Iraq in the early 1930s. He was fascinated by Iraqi and Kuwaiti music, and would sit with Saleh after performances so the two could learn from each other.
In 1936 Daoud and Saleh were asked to found an orchestra for the new Iraqi broadcasting service. They were also favorites of King Ghazi, who had his own radio station in his palace. The king gave Saleh a personally inscribed watch, which remains in the possession of the Al-Kuwaity family and is still working.
In those days the majority of instrumentalists in Iraq were Jewish. According to Shlomo, the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Said, himself a keen amateur musician, switched on the radio one day in 1945 and found there was no music. "When he contacted the radio, he was told that it was Yom Kippur and the Jews did not work. And so it was decided to set up another orchestra with non-Jewish musicians under the direction of Jamil Bashir."
The tumultuous politics of the region shattered the position of the Jewish community in Iraq. Most of its members emigrated, and in 1951 the Al-Kuwaiti brothers left for Israel. This was despite the Emir of Kuwait's sending messengers on the day of their departure asking them to move to Kuwait, with guarantees they would be treated with the utmost respect.
Like many immigrants from Iraq, the Al-Kuwaity brothers faced a difficult time settling in Israel. To make ends meet, Saleh set up a store selling household items in the market of Tel Aviv's Hatikvah neighborhood. Eventually the brothers had their own radio program on the Arabic service of the Kol Israel radio station, and were able to reconnect with their lost listeners in Iraq, Kuwait and elsewhere in the Arab world.
In a film screened during the Brunei Gallery day, Ahmed Mukhtar interviewed Yeheskel Kojaman, a London-based Iraqi-Jewish expert in Iraqi music, and Baher Al-Rajab, the musician son of the Iraqi-Jewish musician Hashim Al-Rajab. It was stated during the film that a committee was formed in Iraq in 1973 to "remove the impurities in the Iraqi heritage." Many names vanished, including those of the Al-Kuwaity brothers, although their music was still widely listened to.
Also screened during the day was a studio discussion of Saleh Al-Kuwaity's work originally broadcast by the US-sponsored satellite TV channel Al-Hurra. In the program a panel of three experts on Iraqi music, including the conductor of the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra Abdul Razzak Al-Azzawi, identified Saleh as the definitive Iraqi composer of the 1930s and 1940s.
Shlomo Al-Kuwaity notes that at the 8th conference of Baghdad University's Faculty of Fine Arts, held in 2008, Ibrahim al-Jazrawi presented a paper entitled "Saleh Al-Kuwaity and his work in Iraqi music and poetry". Al-Jazrawi proposed the establishment of a library to preserve all material related to Saleh.
The Al-Kuwaity family is preparing a book on Saleh and Daoud which includes fresh material from sources in countries including the Netherlands, England, Iraq and Kuwait. Like the double CD, the book is likely to become a treasured collector's item among connoisseurs of Iraqi and Arabic music. - Susannah Tarbush

Saleh Al-Kuwaity (1908-1986) and his brother Daoud (1910-1976) were Iraqi Jews born in Kuwait, who as young boys happened to receive a violin and an oud as gifts from an uncle. They soon became proficient on the instruments, were recognized as child prodigies by the Kuwaiti elite and eventually went on to considerable success in Iraq. In addition to becoming favorites of King Faisal and helping to establish Iraq's first radio station, the pair composed songs for some of the biggest stars of the day (including Egypt's Umm Kulthum) and music for formal events throughout the Arab world. Despite attaining fame and influence that benefited the Iraqi Jewish community and beyond, the brothers opted to immigrate to the recently established state of Israel in the early 1950s. Having come from an Arab country, they had no easy time re-forging a musical career. But they did, and continued to be hitmakers for years to come, even in the face of mounting tension between Israel and its Arabic neighbors. The liner notes to this CD tell the brothers' story in detail but unfortunately don't include much information about the songs (which seem to be performances by Saleh and Daoud's own mini-orchestra). Keeping in mind that the tracks likely date from the first half of the 20th century, they sound reasonably clean. Pretty rough and not a lot of production nuance, but the tart arrangements, vocals and instrumentation (with qanun, ney, bass and percussion in addition to violin and oud) are nonetheless both pleasing and engaging in the way they evoke a colorful past musical era. While it's Saleh (on violin) who does most of the soloing, Daoud and the uncredited ensemble have their moments too. Good vintage music, but I'd like to know (and hear) more. - Tom Orr

Sufi brotherhoods are very established in Turkey despite a law forbidding their activities during the 1920s. They often express themselves through music, which they consider to be a necessary aid for meeting God.

Gypsies (or Roma, as they prefer to call themselves) are one of the most misunderstood and unfairly stereotyped cultures on the planet. Much of what is known about them comes from media treatments that only scratch the surface of this colorful and complex culture. This new release from Putumayo is an effort to break down those stereotypes by dipping into some of the permutations of Romani music from various European countries. As might be expected, music from Hungary makes up the bulk of the tracks (five out of 11), but there are some fine examples of French gypsy jazz (Coco Briaval's tribute to Django Reinhardt, the classic "Les Yeux Noirs" ["Dark Eyes"]) and Spanish flamenco (Miguel Angel Cortés' "Al Likindoy"). With the exception of these tracks and one or two others, much of what is here has a rustic, folkloric quality, with simple arrangements and straightforward harmonies. Hungarian quartet Kalyi Jag uses only guitar with milk jug percussion in its subtle yet infectious "Mori Shej, Sabina" ("My Daughter, Sabina"). As with many Putumayo releases, this is not intended to be the definitive genre sampler. It is more a primer in Gypsy Music 101, a not-so-in-depth survey of a smattering of styles. The liner notes are typically breezy and informative enough for the casual listener. The Skopje Rifai Dervishes are a Sufi sect, of which the members get together once a week. They sing praise songs to Allah in turkish, arabic, roma, serbian, and albanian languages and so reach a state of trance. For Sufi's the zikr is an important way of coming closer to God. The CD contains a complete zikr ceremony. The ceremonies have been followed and studied for a few years by arabist Dr. Niek Biegman, who made photographs and recordings and took care of the liner notes.
