Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey are gearing up to take the Who on tour next spring. They may perform the band’s classic 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia, which the Who recently played at London’s Royal Albert Hall with Pearl Jam and Kasabian. Despite Townshend’s severe tinnitus and rumors that the band was no longer interested in touring, Daltrey explained in an interview with Billboard.com that “We definitely don’t want to stop. We feel it’s the role of the artist to go all the way through life ’til you can’t do it anymore.” [NME.com]M.I.A. posted her yet-to-be officially released album /\/\/\Y/\ on her MySpace page in a high-quality version as a response to the lo-fi copy that leaked on to the Internet. /\/\/\Y/\, which M.I.A. describes as sounding “really American — in an English-alien-in-America kind of way” hits stores on July 13. Now that Wilco has fulfilled its contract with Nonesuch Records, the band may be looking to start a label of their own. In an interview with the Washington, D.C.-based newspaper Express, guitarist Nels Cline said that the band will be “striking out on our own, our own label.” A band spokesperson confirmed that Wilco’s contract with Nonesuch was up, but that “it has not yet been determined who will release the next Wilco record.” [Billboard.com]
Add the American Idol tour to the list of summer 2010 shows with shrinking schedules. Eight dates have been dropped from the tour, following American Idol’s lowest-rated season finale since 2002. Apple is finally going digital — Apple Records, that is. The Beatles’ label will released remastered CD and digital versions of 15 of the imprint’s releases on October 26, including James Taylor’s self-titled 1968 debut; Badfinger’s Magic Christian Music, No Dice and Straight Up; and albums by Mary Hopkin and Billy Preston. The titles are being remastered by the same engineers behind the Beatles’ 2009 reissues. [Blurt-Online.com]
Daft Punk’s soundtrack to Tron: Legacy will arrive on November 23, according to Amazon.com — several weeks ahead of the film’s scheduled December 17 North American release date. In other soundtrack news, Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner has written the music to Richard Ayoade’s upcoming film Submarine, which will be released in 2001.
