The MoonglowsLongtime Motown record executive, producer and doo wop vocalist Harvey Fuqua died in Detroit on July 6th at age 80. Fuqua began his career after forming The Moonglows in his hometown of Louisville, KY, in 1951. In 1958, he retooled the group with singer Marvin Gaye before moving to Detroit and setting up two independent labels, Harvey and Tri-Phi. The labels were eventually bought-up by Motown Records, and Fuqua controlled Motown’s artist development while helping to launch Gaye’s solo career. In the ’80s, Fuqua helped record Gaye’s classic single “Sexual Healing” and is credited as “production advisor” on Gaye’s 1982 album Midnight Love. In 2000, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the rest of the reunited Moonglows. [Billboard.com]

The Recording Academy has changed the rules governing the Grammy Awards Best New Artist category. Spurred by Lady Gaga’s ineligibility for the award in 2010, the Academy announced that any previously Grammy-nominated artist could be eligible for Best New Artist as long as they haven’t released a full album or won any Grammy Awards. Lady Gaga, who took home two other Grammy’s in 2010, was left off the category because her single “Just Dance” had been nominated in the Best Dance Recording category in 2009. [NewYorkTimes.com]

Conor Oberst is set to play two shows protesting Nebraska’s proposed Fremont Law, which some are comparing to Arizona’s recent immigration legislation. The shows, slated to take place in Omaha on July 31st, specifically benefit the Nebraska ACLU, who are currently opposing the law. Also slated to perform are Cursive, Lullaby For The Working Class, and Oberst’s newly reunited side-project Desaparecidos. [Stereogum.com]

Italian opera star Cesare Siepi died on Monday in Atlanta at age 87. A basso cantante, or “singing bass,” Siepi was best known for his portrayal of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. A featured player at the Metropolitan Opera, he also gave over 500 performances during his 23-year association with the NYC institution. [NewYorkTimes.com]

Indie-art pop ensemble Of Montreal has announced dates for the band’s upcoming tour with R&B star Janelle Monae. While Of Montreal appears on Monae’s 2010 album ArchAndroid — and Monae guests on Of Montreal’s upcoming False Priest (due 9/14) — this is the first time they have toured together. After some initial solo dates, the joint tour kicks off in Washington on September 13th. [Pitchfork.com]

  • Video Jam of the Day: Soundpool – Kite of Love

Of all the bands reviving, revisiting and reliving the age of shoegaze, Soundpool may have the most original approach. Sure, they have sighing vocals (female), walls of loud and fuzzy guitars as expected, but on their new album Mirrors in Your Eyes, the band adds shimmering disco-inspired rhythms. It’s not a total shock to hear since so many of the original shoegaze groups grafted dance elements onto their sound (to varying degrees of success). What’s surprising here is how well the group integrates the dance floor-friendly feel into their dreamy songs. Check “Kite of Love” for an example — and while you’re at it, enjoy the hazy video that expertly captures the blurred dreamvision that extreme heat and allergies can bring.
