    Paul Hanmer
    The Essential Paul Hanmer, 2008
SAMA Award winner Paul Hanmer hits the market with an immaculate "Greatest Hits" collection featuring his best works from 6 albums; all in one classic release..! Stickered to indicate this, the album features all the hit tracks from the massively popular "Trains To Taung" album ("Meeting of the Women", Chef's Groove, Consciencelesness" and "Tempo Di Butto"), interspersed with solo piano gems of sheer brilliance, hauntingly beautiful ensemble work combined with other up-tempo tracks, this truly is an "Essential Collecton" that embodies Paul Hanmer's best works ever in a flowing musical portrait beyond compare. A brilliant collection of South Africa's best jazz talent also features in this repertoire, including heavyweights: McCoy Mrubata, Louis Mhlanga, Marcus Wyatt, Ian Herman, Kevin Gibson, Sydney Mnisi amongst many others - an album and artist of impecasble pedigree and credibility...

Paul Hanmer, what can be said about this young Cape Town born composer and jazz musician that has not been said before. A prolific writer of many incredible memorable tunes, who I've had the great privilege to watch and listen to this young mans musical growth over the years and many of his compositions will go on to join the best standards in the South African jazz lexicon. Who can forget the iconic Meeting of the Women from hi debut album Train to Taueng, Hymn for the Ballies from the Unofficial Language debut. Oh! The list just goes on and on, great tunes all. The Essential Paul Hanmer is just that essential to any serious jazz music collection. 15 great track in all for one to enjoy and share with friends. - Eric Allan

  • Al Gromer Khan - The God Perfume II
The God Perfume II is traditional ambient music mixed with elements of the far east. Khan uses traditional ambient elements, such as droned synthesizer chords and drowned beats, mixing them with things such as the sitar and heavenly female vocals. Khan's music is comparable to a lot of the ambient music that follows in the same vein, however in some unexplainable way, Khan's music seems more authentic. ~ Diana Potts, All Music Guide

  • Al Gromer Khan - Sufi
Born in Bavaria in 1946, Alois Gromer has lived in England, India, and Morocco, which broadened his musical tastes and performing style. He attended a recital by sitarist Vilayat Khan and was so moved that he dedicated his life and art to the study of the sitar. After studying with master sitarist Imrat Khan, Gromer became a member of the Khan-i-Gharana dynasty in 1975 and added the Khan name to his own. His contemplative, contemporary approach to music made him popular in the arenas of radio and television scoring, as well as with progressively minded artists like Deuter, Amon Düül, and Florian Fricke of Popul Vuh, with whom Khan collaborated. Solo outings like Mahogany Nights, Space Hotel, and Kamasutra drew critical acclaim for their supple blend of technique, tradition, and technology. 1999 saw the release of Music From an Eastern Rosegarden; Almond Blossom Day followed a year later and mid-2000 saw the release of God Perfume II. Sufi was issued a year later. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

The German composer, born Alois Gromer, received his calling while attending a concert of Vilayat Khan, the Indian sitarist, in 1969. After studying sitar in India for years, he returned to Germany and began recording with musicians such as Deuter, Cat Stevens, and Miles Davis before developing his unique combination of Indian and electronic sounds.

However, those seeking a follow-up to the piercing cries of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan should look elsewhere. Although entitled SUFI, Al Gromer Khan's album is far removed from the ecstatic call and response form of Islamic devotional music. But like Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam, these songs explore the thresholds of consciousness, from the soft pulses of "Khanqah" to the fleeting lament of "Futura."

Personnel includes: Al Gromer Khan (sitar, surbahar, keyboards, percussion); Arad Carnoe (accordion, keyboards); N.S. Nagasoami (hand drum).

  • Kudsi Erguner Ensemble - Fasl, Musique de l'Empire Ottoman
Along with his brother, Suleyman, Kudsi Erguner is one of the top players of the ney, a Turkish reed flute. In addition to his own recordings, Erguner has performed with Peter Gabriel, Maurice Bejart, Peter Brook, Georges Aperghis, Didier Lockwood and Michel Portal. His compositions and collaborations have been heard in the films, The Last Temptation Of Christ and Meetings With Remarkable Men, theater piece and film, Mahabharata, and ballets, Le Voyage Nocturne and Neva. Erguner's band, The Kudsi Erguner Ensemble, was formed in 1988, as Fasi, with the goal of preserving the classical music of the sixteenth century Ottomon Empire.

Erguner hails from a musical family. His father, Ulvi Erguner, and garndfather, Suleyman Erguner, were well known players of the ney. In addition to what he learned from his father and grandfather, Erguner learned from the older musicians who often visited his childhood home. Erguner's knowledge of Turkish classical music was enhanced through his studies of the Sufi-brotherhoods.

Launching his musical career, in 1969, as a member of the Istanbul Radio Orchestra, Erguner moved to Paris, six years later, to study architecture and musicology. The following year, he worked on Peter Brook's movie, Meetings With Remarkable Men, filmed on location in Afghanistan. Erguner later renewed his collaboration with Brook, composing and performing the score for a theater piece and film, Mahabharata.

After conducting research in Turkey, through a grant from UNESCO, in 1980, Erguner returned to Paris and founded Mevlani, an institute for the study of the classical music and teachings of the Sufis. Between 1986 and 1987, Erguner spent lengthy periods in Pakistan recording and documenting traditional music for Radio France and France Musique. In late-1987, Erguner performed a concert of Ottoman music at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

In 1988, Erguner collaborated with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack of The Last Temptation Of Christ. The same year, he recorded an album with his brother, The Mystic Flutes Of Sufi, featuring preludes to ceremonies of the Whirling Dervishes. Kudsi and renewed their partnership in 1990, releasing a second album together, Sufi Music Of Turkey. The following year, Erguner released three albums -- Turquie Musique Soufi, with Ilahi and Nefes N. Uzel, Oriental Dreams, with Mahmoud Tebrizizadeh, and, together with thee Kudsi Erguner Ensemble, was one of several artists featured on Gazel: Classical Sufi Music Of The Ottomon Empire. In 1997, Erguner joined with Derya Turkan to record, Chemins. Two years later, he formed the Kudsi Erguner Sufi-Jazz Project, with Christof Lauer, Michel Godard and Marc Nauseef, and recorded, Ottomania. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

  • Nano Peylet & Denis Cuniot - La musique des Klezmorim et de leurs descendants 1
    Nano Peylet & Denis Cuniot
La musique des Klezmorim et de leurs descendants vol.1. Musique juive traditionelle d'Europe Centrale, 1989
French klezmorim Nano Peylet and Denis Cuinot transmogrify Yiddish songs into chamber music, violating the play-only-what-you-can-carry klezmer dictum by combining the familiar clarinet with, of all things, piano. The amount of open space in these academic-flavored compositions is initially shocking, but the result is music as bold as I've ever heard. Gorgeous subtleties of tone and timbre elbow wild rhythmic liberties, hairpin mood swings and drastic volume changes that would make serious passages seem like vaudeville set ups if they weren't so convincing as soliloquys. Not for nothing are the Marx Brothers recalled in the liner notes. ~ Bob Tarte

  • Matteo Salvatore - Chants de Mendiants en Italie
    Matteo Salvatore
Chants de Mendiants en Italie, 1973 (1988)
Beautiful magical Folk voice from poor beggar who learned old songs on the streets, created his own songs. Poetic, beautiful voice. Simple in its arrangements, but straight from the heart.
