Kombinationen alter und neuer Musik sind in den letzten Jahren fast schon in Mode gekommen - manch mehr oder weniger beredter Programmpluralismus namhafter Ensembles (Fretwork, Kronos Quartett), manch interessante Produktion des Labels ECM kommt einem da in den Sinn. Jetzt konfrontieren Mike Svoboda und Stefan Hussong mit Girolamo Frescobaldis frühbarocken Canzoni und zwölf ausgewählten Harmonies von Cage zwei auf den ersten Blick diametral entgegengesetzte Klangwelten und damit (freilich sehr plakativ ausgedrückt) den Beginn und das Ende kompositorischer Subjektivität - mehr als 350 Jahre Musikgeschichter voneinander entfernt.
Frescobaldis zu Beginndes 17. Jahrhunderts entstandene Stücke für ein Soloinstrument mit Generalbassbegleitung markieren einen gewichtigen Beitrag zur Emanzipation von textgebundenen Formmodellen: kontrastive Instrumentalstücke, deren harmonische Kühnheiten im Dienst einer affektgeladenen Klangrede stehen. In den insgesamt 44 Harmonies, Teil von Apartment House 1776 (1976), trachtet Cage die strukturelle Faktur von den Ideen und Gefühlen eines kompositorischen Individuums wie so häufig durch die Zufallsoperationen des I Ging zu befreien. Ähnlich wie schon in Cheap Imitation (1969), das die Melodielinie aus Saties Socrate zum Gegenstand hat, werden auch hier historische Materialressourcen bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verfremdet in neue Sinnzusammenhänge überführt (und damit listig die Copyright-Probleme umschifft). Hier ist es die Kirchenmusik der mährischen Einwanderer aus der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhinderts, dessen chorale Akkordfortschreitungen Cage in kleinste Bestandteile zerlegt, de-kontextualisiert und neu durcheinander würfelt - mit einem schier wundervollen Ergebnis!
Daran hat die ungewöhnliche Besetzung für Akkordeon und Posaune mit ihrem krichenmusikalischen Impetus großen Anteil, vor allem aber der ungemein feinsinnige Dialog der beiden Spieler. Schon bei den tänzerisch agilen Canzoni verblüffen der Reichtum an Klangfarben und nicht zuletzt die Nuancierungskunst im Posaunenspiel von Mike Svoboda, der sich mit duftiger Leichtigkeit durch behendeste Figurationen bewegt. Der asketische Charme von Cages schütteren Klang-Fragmentierungen gerät in dieser Interpretation und diesen Farben jedoch vollends in Bezirke des Magischen. Zwar hatte Cage in seiner Neuordnung des vorgefundenen Materials jede geschichtliche "Erinnerung" auszuschließen versucht, doch gewinnen in diesem zerbrechlichen Wechselspiel von Klang und Stille gerade jene Momente einen besonderen Zauber, wo wie aus allergrößter Ferne Allusionen des Bekannten hindurchschimmern - so als wären da alte Klänge, befreit von ihrem eigentlichen Kontext, erst jetzt zum Klingen gebracht worden.
Da darf jede noch so spirituell konzipierte Musik getrost ihren Kniefall tun - angesichts der Effektivität dieser "Zufallsoperationen". - Dirk Wiescholleck

This disc features the unusual combination of music by Girolamo Frescobaldi and John Cage, played on the even more unusual combination of accordion and trombone. Six canzons by Frescobaldi are coupled with twelve of the forty-four deconstructed versions of old Moravian church chorales that Cage made for his bicentennial celebration, Apartment House 1776.
The disc is sensibly arranged, beginning and ending with Frescobaldi and interspersing the Frescobaldi canzons with between one and four of the Cage pieces. This makes for a good variety in listening, since the Frescobaldi pieces tend to be much more up-tempo than the Cage ones. Perhaps surprisingly, too, the Frescobaldi canzons actually work well in this instrumental combination, with the trombone taking the melodic line and the accordion providing harmonies. I wouldn't for a moment consider these as first-choice performances, but Hussong and Svoboda are obviously having a lot of fun playing them, and their enthusiasm is infectious.
Cage's deconstructed chorales form the 44 Harmonies. Here, Cage subtracted various notes from the original chorales, then lengthened some of the chords, aiming for as unconventional a harmonic atmosphere as possible. Some of them have a very affecting melancholy to them--particularly in these sensitive performances--but I usually wouldn't want to hear as many as 12 in one sitting.
This is an interesting, eccentric disc, but it will probably appeal to only a few, despite the excellent performances on it. - Amazon reviewer
