  • Putumayo Presents: Quebec
Released to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Quebec City, Putumayo's collection of Quebecois music spans the full range of possibility from contemporary pop to indigenous-based folk. The album opens with a piece from Mathieu Mathieu that could easily pass for a bit of French café music. DobaCaracol provide a contemporary alternative sort of background with light, lilting French vocals slithering over the top, and Martin Léon starts out his contribution with some light guitar and whistling à la Ennio Morricone (under whom he studied for a time), before adding a funkier rhythm and some electronic instrumentation for a catchy total. Quebecois idol singer Annie Villeneuve adds a vocal reminiscent of Evanescence to her track, and Chloe Sainte-Marie almost evokes Johnny Clegg's work with her quicker, earthier sound. Kashtin's Florent Vollant provides the single track on the album not in French (he sings in his native Montaignais for the most part), Les Cowboys Frigants' Marie-Annick Lépine moves from the frenetic sound of the Cowboys to a dichotomously opposed loping folk in "Au Chalet," and Myreille Bedard provides a light bossa nova with just a touch of chanson hidden away inside. Polemil Bazar successfully mixes klezmer aesthetics with a trippy circus sound, and after one of the most traditional (and almost Celtic) pieces on the album from La Bottine Souriante, the set closes with a different, more French-influenced traditional sound courtesy of Le Vent du Nord's accordion, violin, and hurdy-gurdy. Where many Quebecois compilations would have you believe that Quebec is all French cafés and extended chansons, this album makes a good show of the range of sounds, including much of the contemporary styling of the province, to good effect. Worth a spin for anyone curious. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

  • New Orleans Christmas
New Orleans Christmas captures the unique and vibrant voice of this city with a collection of holiday favorites decked in the blues, jazz and swing flavors the Crescent City is famous for.

The album opens with a familiar favorite as Big Al Carson and Academy Award-winning Lars Edegran put a big band twist on Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Home-town favorite James Andrews summons up the spirit of New Orleans Christmas past, as the gravelly tones of his voice and trumpet evoke the raspy vocals of the great Louis Armstrong on Christmas in New Orleans. Other tunes get new twists as a bevy of notable musicians put their signature touches on the holiday classics: Ellis Marsalis tickles the ivories to bring new life into God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, while the internationally-known John Boutte dreams for snow to fall on the usually-warm city of his birth on his version of White Christmas, recording especially for this collection. Trumpeter and bandleader Gregg Stafford leads the Heritage Hall Jazz Band on their respectful and understated treatment of Silver Bells.

Not to be forgotten, the new school of New Orleans music is also helping to get the jingle bells rockin'. The New Birth Brass Band gets the big guy dancing on Santa's Second Line, while Ingrid Lucia, a recent settler in the New Orleans area, teases the chords and the man in red on the playful Zat You, Santa Claus? Papa Don Vappie, The Dukes of Dixieland, Banu Gibson, and Topsy Chapman round out this musical feast of holiday proportions.

  • Yanni - Love Songs
Yanni born in November 14, 1954 in Kalamata, Greece, is a Greek self-taught pianist, keyboardist, and composer.
Although many fans and critics call his music new age, Yanni himself has distanced himself from that label. In his autobiography, Yanni devotes an entire chapter to the subject, stating that he prefers to call his music contemporary instrumental.
Yanni is a self-taught pianist who began his musical career by giving recitals for family members though he had no formal training and could not read a note. At the age of 18 he attended the University of Minnesota. While a student there, Yanni joined an up-and-coming local group called Chameleon where he met drummer Charlie Adams. Chameleon earned some modest commercial success touring throughout the Midwest. After receiving a B.A. in psychology, he sought a life in music. He moved to California in pursuit of movie soundtrack work. In 1987 he put together a small band which included John Tesh and Charlie Adams, and began touring to promote his earliest instrumental albums, Keys to Imagination, Out of Silence, and Chameleon Days.In 1992 Dare to Dream was released. It was Yanni's first Grammy-nominated album and featured "Aria", a song based on The Flower Duet and popularized by an award-winning British Airways commercial.

  • New Orleans Brass
"Putumayo" is the name of a region in southwestern Colombia, of the river that runs between it and the land of Ecuador, and is the Quechua word for any river that flows profusely. In North America, the word Putumayo is associated with a company that sells fine imported clothing and produces a wonderfully diverse series of world music CDs with colorful, impossible-to-ignore packaging. Putumayo put out an anthology of New Orleans music in 2005, a New Orleans Christmas collection in 2006, and a New Orleans Brass album in 2007. Brass wind instruments have played an important role in the music of New Orleans since the Spanish-American War, and were vital tools for the development of jazz during the first half of the 20th century. Putumayo's New Orleans Brass collection taps the contemporary scene for a characteristically pleasurable range of rhythms and moods. The lineup includes the Dirty Dozen Brass Band with Dr. John, Kermit Ruffins, James and Troy Andrews, the Yockamo All-Stars, Leroy Jones, and John Boutté. Artists performing in perhaps slightly more old-fashioned styles are Glen Andrews & the Lazy Six, the Preservation Hall Hot 4, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, Bob French's Original Tuxedo Band with Leon "Kid Chocolate" Brown, and the Dukes of Dixieland, a much hipper-sounding ensemble than the mainstream Dixie pop group of the same name that made million-selling LPs during the 1950s and '60s. Once again, Putumayo offers substantial, accessible music to groove and move to, this time in the form of a good healthy shot of soulful sounds right up off of the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide

On New Orleans Brass a veritable who's who of contemporary New Orleans musicians and vocalists demonstrate why the city continues to be one of the world's most vibrant musical centers. Throughout the years, New Orleans brass bands developed a musical culture unlike any other, with a special march-and-dance rhythm that has flavored all New Orleans music including rhythm and blues, jazz and funk.

The New Orleans brass tradition experienced a dramatic renaissance in the 1950s and 60s, as traditional jazz bands proliferated, and a new breed of brass band -- one that added R&B sounds -- began to tour the world. Out of that renaissance came the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, one of the city's most celebrated musical ambassadors. They are featured here with Dr. John on "It's All Over Now." In the early 1980s, a younger generation joined the second brass revival when Kermit Ruffins and a group of his high-school friends founded the renowned Rebirth Brass Band.

Unique to this collection is John Boutté's moving version of the spiritual "I'll Fly Away," recorded especially for this release. The Preservation Hall Hot 4 provides their rendition of "Dinah" and The Dukes of Dixieland deliver their version of the New Orleans classic "When the Saints Go Marching In."

  • Latinas: Women of Latin America
In societies as patriarchal as those of Latin America, music is one of the few venues in which women have traditionally been allowed to shine. They have been the purveyors of lullabies, celebratory songs, and religious ritual music. In the last several decades, Latin American women have made tremendous strides into the commercial music world, most notably in the areas of Cuban son and Brazilian samba. All the while, however, women in Peru, Chile, Argentina, and other countries have been quietly making inroads into popular music. This release examines the varicolored tapestry of Latin American women's music. The veteran Argentine political singer Mercedes Sosa, who helped popularize nueva cancion, the Latin American counterpart to the '60s folksong revival in the U.S., contributes "Un Son Para Portinari," a paean to radical painter Cándido Portinari. Her deep, straightforward voice fearlessly declaims Nicolas Guillen's poetry. Mariana Montalvo, a Chilean singer with a honeyed voice, uses the traditional sounds of her native country in new ways on "La Libélula (The Dragonfly)," a song with an irresistible sway. Mexican singer Lhasa's cool, otherworldly voice intertwines with sinuous cello lines on her smoky cabaret song "De Cara A La Pared." Comparisons to Sadé are inevitable here. By contrast, Cuban singer Celina González ("Guajira Linda") has the assertive pipes of Ethel Merman. There is good, solid representation of a variety of styles here. As with any compilation, there are a few weak tracks, but the strong ones make the whole thing a more than worthwhile listen. ~ Peggy Latkovich, All Music Guide
