- Utheatre - A Touch of Zen
Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism. The Japanese word Zen is derived from the Chinese word Chan, which in turn is derived from the Sanskrit word dhyana, which means "meditation" (see Etymology below).
Zen emphasizes experiential prajna in the attainment of enlightenment. As such, it de-emphasizes theoretical knowledge in favor of direct realization through meditation and Dharma practice. The teachings of Zen include various sources of Mahayana thought, including the Prajnaparamita literature and the teachings of the Yogacara and Tathagatagarbha schools.
The emergence of Zen as a distinct school of Buddhism was first documented in China in the 7th century AD. From China, Zen spread south to Vietnam, and east to Korea and Japan. As a matter of tradition, the establishment of Zen is credited to the South Indian prince-turned-monk Bodhidharma, who came to China to teach a "special transmission outside scriptures" that "did not stand upon words".

HEREПереслать - Flamenco Fantasy
A fine introduction to flamenco for those who get a little weary of foot-stamping and the encouraging cries of the supporting cast.
The familiarity of the pieces lends a touch of confidence to the listener in that, unlike the more spontaneous and improvised flamenco you'd find in a bar in Sevilla or Cordoba, you can actually enjoy the interpretations with a sense of 'I think I can guess where this piece is going' and then be delighted by an interpretation you'd never imagined.
There are a few occasions when the orchestration tends to dominate the excellent guitar playing, but given the reputation of the orchestra, it's not surprising that they want their say.
On balance, it's great music for sitting in the car with, eating rabo de toro with anyone uninitiated in the sound of famenco or simply enjoying a glass of wine on any occasion.

Liona Maria Boyd's attraction to Latin culture and her passion for the guitar should not surprise us. Her grandmother was born in Linares, Spain, and her father grew up in the city of Bilbao. As a teenager, Liona spent a year living in the artist colony of San Miguel de Allende, relishing the cultural vitality of Mexico. Her love for Latin music has ofter found expression on her recordings, but never more brilliantly so than on Camino Latino. This unique collaborative effort presents Liona with some of today's most outstanding guitarists, including Al DiMeola, Strunz and Farah, Steve Morse, Jesse Cook and others, as they pay tribute to her in a musical dialog rich with melodic invention and propulsive rhythm. Camino Latino treats us to an exciting blend of traditional and contemporary sounds labeled 'Nuevo Latino'. Enjoy, as one of the world's most imaginitive guitarists leads us with beauty, grace and panache on a unique Latin Journey.

Part TwoПереслать - Watazumi Doso Roshi - Hotchiku
Watazumi Doso Roshi
Hotchiku, 2000
Watazumido Doso Roshi (1910-1992) is perhaps the most legendary of all modern shakuhachi players and teachers. Amongst his many students is Yokoyama Katsuya, one of greatest players in Japan today.
Regarding himself as something other than a musician, Watazumido based his music in an uncompromising vigorous physical discipline. He was a practitioner of the Jo stick, a long hardwood pole with which he used to stretch, massage, pounds and invigorate his body in a daily regimen beginning at 3:30 AM each day. For over 3,000 consecutive days, he maintained this discipline.
Watazumido studied Rinzai Zen attaining the title of Roshi or Master and later became the Kanjo or unifying head of the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhism. He shunned traditional organized Zen practice for 32 years in favor of his own iconoclastic approach distinguished by breath training and vigorous exercise at its core. The lengthening of the "Out Breath" in his practice is directly descended from the wisdom of the breath as practiced in Zen.
Watazumido's music is as unique as it is intense. His style of shakuhachi playing is based on a discipline combining Zen breath awareness and the martial arts. He is known for the blowing an original, personal style of Honkyoku on bamboos of enormous size and length called hotchiku flutes.

Part TwoПереслать - Early Morning Jazz For Lovers
Early Morning Jazz for Lovers provides a soft, but not saccharine, 40 minutes of music for first thing in the morning romance. There's an interesting conglomeration of musicians represented on this disk, to say the least. From the Charlie Parker-influenced Phil Woods to the enigmatic, sometimes quirky clarinet player Pee Wee Russell. However, it is Woods who is the feature player here, with six of the ten tracks belonging to him (although on one of the tunes credited to him, "When Dreams Come True," there's just piano and no sax on the track). Woods' alto takes on a softer tone than one usually hears, appropriate for the amorous mood the music is trying to create, or to enhance. Grady Tate chips in with his pleasant, unassuming vocalizing on "And I Love Her" and "The Windmills of Your Mind" from his 1968 album Windmills of My Mind, with Herbie Hancock, on organ no less, and lots of strings. Guitarist Gabor Szabo contributes a solo on "Song of Injured Love." Pee Wee Russell's up-tempo "That Old Feeling" seems out of synch with the mood the other tunes are venturing to establish. But it is good listening anyway. ~ Dave Nathan, All Music Guide
