Banned by the man: Billboard collects 20 “music moments” that famously resulted in censorship, from risqué music videos (Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls,” M.I.A.’s “Born Free”) to ill-advised photographs (Miley Cyrus’ “slanty eyes” picture). [Billboard.com]
Arcade Fire’s upcoming album, The Suburbs, will span 16 songs, according to the group's recent Twitter barrage. The band tweeted each track title and revealed such concept album-like songs as “Half-light I” and “Half-Light II (No Celebration),” not to mention “Sprawl I (Flatland)” and “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains).” The album is set for release August 3rd. Team Edward. Team Jacob. Team… Sue Sylvester? In a recent race to the top of the Billboard 200, the latest Glee soundtrack beat out “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” soundtrack by 8,000 copies. This marks Glee’s third chart-topping album in a row, as well as the TV show’s fifth soundtrack in less than 12 months. Don’t expect it to remain on top for long, though; Drake’s newly-released studio debut, Thank Me Later, is expected to sell over 450,000 copies during its first week. [Billboard.com]

Avant-garde jazz trumpeter Bill Dixon died on June 16th at his home in Bennington, VT, after an extended illness. He was 84. A journeyman artist and educator, Dixon made his name organizing the October Revolution in Jazz, an influential 1964 music festival at the Cellar Café that helped spawn the Jazz Composers Guild. From the late ’60s onward, Dixon taught at Bennington College, from which he retired in 1995. His later years found him performing routine shows in Europe. A memorial celebration for Dixon is planned for later this year in New York City. [AllAboutJazz.com]
Переслать - Hot Damn Jammz 58: World in Motion
If you haven’t been deafened by the constant blaring of the vuvuzelas or the incessant whine of the people complaining about them, why don’t you check out some jammz? In fact, why don’t you just forget about the World Cup entirely since the outcome is a forgone conclusion. Sweden all the way, right?

Sidestep that pungent name and tune into raucous, mischievous dance-punk like “Electronics” and the Happy Mondays-esque “Don’t Ask.”2:54
This duo made up of two sisters from the UK may be rather lo-fi sounding, but the drama runs high in their goth-y, gaze-y songs.Sleep ∞ Over

The French entry in the 2010 World Cup of girl-fronted jangle/noise pop was unheralded at the beginning of play, but has proven itself it be a real contender in the later rounds. Check their track “Enormous Pop” for confirmation of their happy, happy Velocity Girl-ness.BARB
Calling these guys (and gal) a Zew Zealand supergroup might be a stretch since Liam Finn, Connnan Mockasin, Lawrence Arabia, Eliza-Jane Barnes and Seamus Ebbs aren’t all that well-known except perhaps in their home country. Their forthcoming self-titled album is a super good time though, full of loose and rowdy pop sing-alongs that’ll make you want to seek out the participants other albums.Nachtmystium

Funk singer, songwriter and guitarist Garry “Diaperman” Shider died on Wednesday at age 56 from complications of brain and lung cancer. Best known as the musical director of George Clinton’s Parliament and Funkadelic bands, Shider earned his nickname because of his fondness for wearing a loincloth onstage. He was one of Clinton’s most versatile players, co-writing some of P-Funk’s biggest hits and delivering standout moments on tracks like “One Nation Under a Groove” and “Cosmic Slop.” After joining the fold permanently in 1972, Shider played and sang on most P-Funk releases, including Bootsy Collins’ solo albums. Neil Young’s 2003 album Greendale is now a graphic novel. Writer Joshua Dysart and artist Cliff Chang took the concepts of the environment, community and war expressed in Young’s 28th studio album and turned it into “an American fable with strong supernatural elements.” Dysart and Young worked on the novel for several years, and connected with Chiang — whose work includes Human Target and the Green Arrow and Black Canary books — in 2008. Переслать - Video Jam of the Day: Here We Go Magic – Collector
Did you ever wonder what happened to the guy who directed all those light-saturated, stage-y, weirdly dramatic videos back in the ’80s? He made videos for bands like Flock of Seagulls, Woodentops and Icicle Works, then disappeared in a haze of dry ice and trenchcoats. Gone but not forgotten it appears, as Here We Go Magic hired him to helm a video for the rollicking good track “Collector” from their recently released album Pigeons. It’s like he never missed a day….
