  • News Roundup: 6/28/2010

Stevie WonderWith sunny weather for the first time in years, the 40th annual Glastonbury Festival was notable for heatstroke as well as memorable performances. One of the most remarkable was Stevie Wonder’s headlining set at the Pyramid Stage, which featured his hits along with a rendition of “Happy Birthday”, on which he was joined by Glastonbury organizer Michael Eavis. The Guardian’s music editors rounded up their favorite moments from the festival’s banner year. [NME.com, Guardian.co.uk]

Sunday night’s BET Awards were especially emotional, arriving almost a year to the day after Michael Jackson’s death at 50. Alicia Keys and Nicki Minaj were the night’s big winners, each earning two awards: Keys was named Best Female R&B Artist and Best Collaboration with Jay-Z for “Empire State of Mind.” Minaj, meanwhile, won Best Female Hip Hop Artist and Best New Artist. Drake, Trey Songz and Young Money were among the other winners. While the night also featured performances by Kanye West, Eminem, T.I. and Monica, it was Chris Brown who drew the most attention. During his Michael Jackson tribute, Brown was overcome with emotion and too choked up to sing the finale “Man in the Mirror.” [Billboard.com, SomeKindofAwesome.com]

Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Las Vegas late on Sunday night. The singer was taken to Clark County Jail, with bail set at $2000. A hearing was scheduled for Monday morning. Neil recently released Tattoos & Tequila, his first solo album in 15 years. [MTV.com]

R.I.P. contemporary Norwegian composer Arne Nordheim, who has died at age 78. Equally fluent in experimental and orchestral composition, Nordheim was known for his unconventional approach in both styles. A sound sculpture he created for the Scandinavian Pavillion at the 1970 Osaka World Exposition featured six loops that, if allowed to run uninterrupted, would not return to their starting points for 102 years; the 1983 choral/orchestral cantata Wirklicher fused verses inspired by Rilke with a double concerto for soprano and cello. Neil Young plans to unearth “Vampire Blues,” a song from his 1974 album On the Beach, on his upcoming tour of Florida and the Gulf Coast area — a fitting choice, since it skewers the oil industry. [TwentyFourBit.com]

Andre 3000’s cover of the Beatles’ “All Together Now,” which debuted in a Nike commercial paying tribute to Kobe Bryant, is now available for purchase on iTunes — and is streaming on Hypetrak. [Hypetrak.com]

  • The-Dream – Love King

Love KingTerius Nash, Carlos McKinney, and Christopher Stewart had long seized possession of the belt — the belt for the electronic pop-R&B division, once held by innovators Leon Sylvers III, Kashif and Morrie Brown, Prince, Jam & Lewis, Teddy Riley, Timbaland and Missy Elliott, and the Neptunes — when details of Love King materialized. Perhaps the conquest is one reason why Nash, aka the-Dream, declared that this, his third album, would be his last. As a solo artist, he had nothing left to prove. Love King, however, shows that he has plenty left to give. That goes for running his mouth, wearing out every contemporary R&B lyrical cliché, and coming off like a classless, materialistic, womanizing jerk. Once again, his way with a melody, an outrageous line, and an exquisitely adroit rhythm, all components in his immense crazy-quilt song cycle — full of recurring lyrical themes and sonic flourishes — transcend the flaws.

Though this is the least collaborative Dream album, with McKinney and Stewart absent on six of the dozen songs, its layer upon layer of synthetic opulence and greater range of lushly detailed arrangements sometimes make the first two sound spindly and small-scoped in comparison. The drawback is that snappy singles aren’t as common, but the album is an absolute embarrassment of riches for those in love with the indulgent artist side of the-Dream. That’s not to say that those who prefer the hitmaking side are shut out. “Make Up Bag,” all boom and snap filled with swirling fluff, gives the object a second meaning with a hook worthy of a double dutch chant: “If you ever make your girlfriend mad, don’t let your good girl go bad/Drop five stacks on the makeup bag.” “Yamaha,” roaring and ecstatic, is an upgrade of “Fast Car” and his most energizing song to date. At the other end, or the bottom, is “Abyss,” an elegiac mini-epic several shades darker than anything off Love vs Money: “Bitch, I could give a damn how harsh this may seem/But I’m here to put your heart in its place/Chained up at the bottom of the lake.” “Turnt Out,” set on the slow-spin cycle, is one of many songs in which Nash broadens his abilities as a singer. He has sung in falsetto before, but never with such softness; it’s a charmingly imperfect guide vocal for one of his female collaborators. Evidently aware that it’s too soon to confine himself to writing and producing for others, he doesn’t wait more than 15 minutes into the album to boast “Who the fuck’s gonna replace me?” and “Six-seven-20-11, I’m-a drop that Love Affair.”

[Note: A deluxe edition in glossy packaging adds five songs, some of which -- the gorgeous, Aaliyah-referencing "Veteran" especially -- should have made the album proper.]
