Sure the industry is collapsing (thanks Thom Yorke for that stunning revelation) but we’re ready to do the Philly Freeze on its grave. Why? Because though the industry may vanish, there will still be awesome bands out there; playing dingy clubs, self-releasing their albums, and thrilling people with their art. Carrie Underwood won the “Video of the Year” award last night at the CMT Music Awards for “Cowboy Casanova.” Underwood also garnered the CMT Performance of the Year award for “Temporary Home.” Both accolades came on the heels of the former American Idol champ's second Academy of Country Music award for Entertainer of the Year. Also scoring awards last night were Lady Antebellum, who won Group Video of the Year for “Need You Now,” and Miranda Lambert, who took the Female Video of the Year for “White Liar.” [Billboard.com]The Strokes played their first show since 2006 in a surprise appearance in England last night. Billed under the name Venison, the band played an 18-song set at Dingwall’s in London. Currently recording their fourth album, they’re in the UK for a headlining slot at the Isle of Wight Festival on Saturday and the RockNess Music Fest on Sunday. [NME.com]
Indie noise-duo Sleigh Bells have announced their first headlining tour. Starting in Baltimore on July 1, the tour will see Sleigh Bells hit various North American cities, including an appearance at Chicago’s Pitchfork Music Festival, before wrapping things up at several Scandinavian festivals. Guitarist Jeff Beck just wrapped up a three-night event at NYC’s Iridium club honoring legendary guitar innovator Les Paul. The string of live shows, which ended Wednesday night, featured Beck backed by retro Irish songstress Imelda May and her band. [MTV.com]
