The Smashing Pumpkins are offering a new mini-album as a download on the band’s website. Titled Teargarden By Kaleidyscope 1: Songs for a Sailor, the album collects four tracks previously released on the internet by frontman Billy Corgan. It also marks the first in a set of of 11 mini-albums, which Corgan tends to slowly release over the coming months. [WallStreetJournal.com]South African opera singer Siphiwo Ntshebe died on Tuesday at age 34 from a sudden bout of meningitis. Nicknamed the “Black Pavarotti”, Ntshebe was born into poverty and grew up in a shack in New Brighton, a township in Port Elizabeth. At age 16, he received a scholarship to Cape Town University in Australia and was later awarded a postgraduate scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. Prior to his death, Ntshebe had been chosen by Nelson Mandela to perform at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Johannesburg on June 11. [Guardian.co.uk/]
The British supergroup Gorillaz has been named as the replacement headliner for U2 at this year’s Glastonbury festival. The announcement comes in the wake of U2’s recent world tour postponement due to Bono’s back surgery. [NME.com]
Ellen DeGeneres has announced the formation of her own music label, eleveneleven. 12-year old YouTube sensation Greyson Chance is the first artist to sign with her, having performed on DeGeneres’ TV show several days after his piano-fueled performance of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” became a viral hit. Kings of Leon are working on songs for their follow-up to 2008’s Only By the Night, according to lead singer Nathan Followill. During a recent press conference for the band’s headlining performance at Tennessee’s Bonnaroo Music Festival on June 11, Followill said that the songs being recorded in New York City are “beachy” and reminiscent of the group’s 2003 debut, Youth and Young Manhood.
