- Hot Damn Jammz 55: Makin' Babies Every Day!
Most of the HDJz staff is poolside at the moment, the rest of us are dreaming about being poolside. Wouldn’t you like to be poolside too? Since you’re inexplicably here reading about jams instead of living your life (and we’re here writing about them instead of living ours), let’s have some fun, okay? We just made a baby and it looks like Brad Pitt crossed with Christina Hendricks…yes, we are that beautiful!
WOOM
Oakland, CA might be one of the last places you’d expect to find a band as delicate and
pastoral as this. WOOM conjure up images of breezy meadows and convoluted waterfalls, not whistle tips and Al Davis. Oh well, we’ll love them no matter where they’re from. Be enchanted by their first album Muu's Way when it comes out on July 6th.DOM
We’re a little late to the party on DOM but better late then never, right? The trio plays the kind of thick, hooky rock with synths that never goes out of style no matter how many miles the template has on it’s odometer. Check the track “Living in America” for a few minutes of good time, deceptively lunkheaded fun.Bars Of Gold
Melodic, driving and danceable, Bars of Gold’s post-everything sound has enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes.Soft Metals
Need some frosty, art-damaged electro pop somewhere in between Glass Candy and Indian Jewelry? Meet Portland’s Soft Metals. My Education
This Austin collective has been around for awhile, but their moody Southwestern post-rock jammz are unquestionably hott.Sea Lions
We traveled to the NYC Popfest last weekend and one of the bands that knocked us out was Oxnard, CA’s Sea Lions. Their simple, jangly tunes have huge hooks and the monotone vocals, rather than being annoying, end up being strangely affecting. They have a single, some tapes and a lot of promise!

Another Glee album has topped the charts, giving the show its second number one record in five weeks. Showstoppers sold more than 136,000 copies during its first week of release, besting the number two album — a souped-up, reissued version of Exile on Main St. — by 60,000 units. Glee will release a fourth full-length album, Journey to Regionals, on June 8. [Variety.com]Although the Rolling Stones didn’t the top the charts in America, Exile on Main St. did score the number one position in the UK, beating out Faithless’ The Dance and marking the group’s first European chart-topper in 16 years. Striking while the iron’s hot, American Idol finalists Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox both signed recording contracts within 24 hours of the season finale. DeWyze, who took home the Idol crown on Wednesday night, signed with 19 Recordings Limited (the show’s resident label) and RCA Records, while Bowersox opted for a partnership between 19 Recordings and Jive. Both singers also released singles yesterday, and albums are expected to appear before the winter holidays. [MTV.com]
The Gulf Coast oil spill may be garnering more headlines in recent weeks than the Arizona immigration bill, but that hasn’t stopped a number of musicians — including Rage Against the Machine, Kanye West, Rise Against, Conor Oberst, Sonic Youth, Tenacious D, and Massive Attack — from launching Sound Strike. Led by Rage frontman Zack de la Rocha, the movement calls for a boycott of Arizona’s concert venues, with each artist refusing to play in the state until SB 1070 is repealed. [Spinner.com]
With summer finally upon us, Pitchfork offers up a list of the season’s best festivals, from Bonnaroo to Bad Bonn Kilbi. [Pitchfork.com]
