Wednesday night’s season nine American Idol finale bid a fond, lengthy farewell to cantankerous judge Simon Cowell, who is leaving the show to helm a U.S. version of his popular U.K. talent show X Factor. Idol’s previous winners (minus David Cook, who was performing at a charity concert) and longtime judge Paula Abdul (who was replaced this season by Ellen DeGeneres) were on hand to say goodbye. Meanwhile, gruff rocker Lee DeWyze was crowned this season’s Idol over Crystal Bowersox, who was thought by many to be the favorite. Ratings for this season’s finale were down nearly 16% from last year’s, while last week’s results show totaled 47 million votes, a significant drop from 88 million at the same point in 2009. DeWyze’s winning single, a cover of U2’s “Beautiful Day,” is already in iTunes’ Top 10 downloads. [MTV.com, Billboard.com, Idolator.com]The Arcade Fire’s Will and Win Butler shed some light on the ideas behind the band’s upcoming album The Suburbs in an interview with NPR. Win explained, “A lot of my heroes from Bob Dylan to Joe Strummer were suburban kids who had to pretend they were train-hoppers their whole lives. Talking about an experience and not make-believe [is what we're doing on 'The Suburbs'].” Will added that “Two poles of the album, maybe have a rock’n'roll thing, then more electronics. The album lies between these extremes.” The Suburbs is due in early August. [NME.com]
The war of words between M.I.A. and reporter Lynn Hirschberg is getting contentious. M.I.A. shared the phone number of Hirschberg, who wrote an unflinching profile of the singer for this weekend’s Times Magazine, on Twitter. Hirschberg responded in The New York Observer, saying “It’s a fairly unethical thing to do, but I don’t think it’s surprising … She’s a provocateur, and provocateurs want to be provocative.” M.I.A. says she will publish an “unedited” version of the interview on her label neetrecordings’ website during Memorial Day weekend. “Eurovision” and “subdued” aren’t necessarily words that go together, but they are this year, thanks to the global economic crisis. Several countries, including Andorra, Montenegro, the Czech Republic and Hungary are not participating, while hosting country Norway is spending a quarter less on the contest’s budget than Russia did last year. While the delays keeping Big Boi’s Sir Luscious Left Foot album off the shelves haven’t quite reached Chinese Democracy proportions, it’s still super annoying. All the leaked tracks so far have pointed to the possibility that the album is going to be massively entertaining. If nothing else, it should once and for all crush the notion that André 3000 was the only genius in Outkast. And it contains a huge jam for the upcoming summer, “Shutterbug.” The track’s fat synth bass and vocoder are pure summertime, the vocal hook is bubblegum sticky, and Big Boi’s flow is, as usual, smooth as creamy peanut butter. It’s also a little weird. Check the video and keep your fingers crossed that the record will actually come out in July as promised…..Переслать
