    The Harmonic Choir - Hearing Solar Winds
    The work of David Hykes focuses on a few throat singing traditions, including Mongolian and Tuvan. In 1975, he combined this singing form and the harmonic series, and five years later founded his Harmonic Awareness practice in meditation. While Hykes was born in New Mexico in 1953, he grew up in the Northwest and lived in N.Y.C. from the mid-'70s through the late '80s. Beginning in the arts in performance and as a filmmaker, Hykes eventually moved toward composition and teaching meditation. He has recorded almost ten CDs with his Harmonic Choir. ~

    Beginning in 1975 David Hykes developed his chant of wordless multiple tones with a small choir of friends and peaked with this recording in 1982. No other Hykes recording since touches the purity and structural soundness of this one, which, though nothing like it existed before, sounds like a tradition already centuries old. Though inspired by the central Asian overtone or diphonic cultures none of them sound like this. One to seven voices carve ringing echoes in a 12th century French abbey, so complex in there interaction that other composite images appear high above them at times like holy apparitions. This group use only their voices and the immense space of a stone cathedral, to make a moving, one-of-a-kind passage through soul time. Hykes' solos find the heart like a sapphire laser and illuminate it into surrender, peace. Deep, cavernous, sometimes perilous, at others sublimely beautiful beyond lingual reckoning, this is without doubt their single greatest contribution to the choral arts. The CD version includes the complete sessions which were edited for the Radio France vinyl original, adding nearly 8 minutes. A fantastic acoustic document and essential find for seekers of sonic medicine.

    This is another of the Norwegian Jan Garbarek's international stylistic fusion projects, this time combining his saxophone work with the oud playing of Brahem and the tablas of Hussain. Such beautifully elegant, yet dramatic music! Brahem's playing in particular is sensational (for those who have not heard the oud played, this is a stringed instrument with a sound something like a dulled lute). The music itself is rather serious, even sombre-sounding at times, but out of this rather dark North African ambience regularly emerge flashes of focussed energy that will, as they say, knock your socks off. A strangely ignored album that deserves much more attention than it has received.

    Am 31. August vor 20 Jahren starb die Sängerin Lin Jaldati. Als Tänzerin (die Ausbildung dazu hatte sie sich über Jahre als Textilarbeiterin selbst verdient) in renommierten Ballettkompanien hatte die in Amsterdam geborene Jüdin ihre künstlerische Laufbahn begonnen, sich dann mehr und mehr dem Solo-Ausdruckstanz gewidmet und hier wiederum jüdische Themen und Traditionen aufnehmend. 1936 traf sie einen deutschen Emigranten, den Pianisten und Musikwissenschaftler Eberhard Rebling. Sie wurden und blieben ein Paar – neben den Tänzen rückten jiddische und jüdische Lieder immer mehr in den Vordergrund. Hier sollten die Beiden in der Folgezeit Pionierarbeit leisten, viele neue Quellen entdecken und in ihre Programme einbauen. Nach der Besetzung Hollands durch Nazi-Deutschland gingen sie in den Untergrund und leisteten gefahrvollen Widerstand – die erste Tochter wurde geboren. Und doch: 1944 wurde Lin Jaldati deportiert und hat Auschwitz und Bergen-Belsen überlebt. Nach dem Krieg fanden sie sich wieder und gingen mangels Arbeitmöglichketen 1952 in die DDR. Auch in ihrer neuen Heimat blieben sie ihrer selbstgesetzten Aufgabe treu, die Erinnerung an eine beinah ausgelöschte und verschwundene Kultur wachzuhalten – sie mit ihrer Stimme, er als Begleiter und Förderer am Klavier.
    Unsere Neuerscheinung bringt ein Liedprogramm der Beiden aus ihrem ersten Lebensjahrzehnt im Nachkriegsdeutschland, das der Rundfunk der DDR produziert hat. Es finden sich darauf 16 Lieder in jiddischer Sprache; „Vier Wiegenlieder für Arbeitermütter" von Hanns Eisler und Bertolt Brecht sowie neun Lieder des jüdisch-tschechischen, deutschsprachigen Dichters Louis Fürnberg – diese sind ein Novum auf Schallplatte. Alle Lieder sind in dieser Fassung Erstveröffentlichungen auf CD.
    Eberhard Rebling, als „Gerechter unter den Völkern" von Yad Vaschem geeehrt, starb am 2. August 2008.
