  • Fishman Interview: Modern Drummer

Modern Drummer did an August cover story on Jon Fishman. Highlights include an explanation of the band's trouble leading up to Coventry and why they don't play Mound.

A significant part of the interview is about Fish's time away from the band:

I got married and moved to mid-coast Maine and bought a farm. I learned how to milk a cow, and I shoveled a lot of animal manure and made a giant compost pile, which produced some really good compost for the garden. It got to a point where I was sort of feeling like, well, maybe I'll just go forward as a farmer.

The interview gets technical. There is a spread of Fish's kit, complete with vacuum and mic selections. He talks about his drum lessons with legend Joe Morello and dissects his practice regimen. I particularly enjoy the flam exercise Fish invented, dubbed "the ladder", which would later become the drum part for Party Time.

Special thanks to artfitz for the full interview

  • McLovins Video -Gathering of the Vibes 7/31/10 -Purple Trees - Rappers Delight- Tweeprise

Purple Trees is a McLovin original from the Conundrum CD. An ode to phantasy tour and social media. With the notes of Purple Trees as the sample, drummer and lead vocalist, Jake Huffman then launches into a perfect rendition of Sugarhill Gang's Rapper's Delight which then sequed into Tweeprise.

Now, I may be biased since I know the boys but this was easily one of the best performances of Gathering of the Vibes. Before the McLovins set I marched with "Uncle Dave" Smith and a bunch of other McLovin fans in the 1000 Hippie McLovin March to get people over to the Green Vibes tent. I had told my friend Meredith of the Views Skewed blog to make sure she didnt miss the McLovin's set which she had at Nateva. Meredith looked at me and said "You said they are good, but boy they are really really good"

Here is how one festival goer described Ax Lovin: Jeff Howard

... It's not that he is just technically good, he plays with a tremendous amount of soul.. He is bleeds every note up their on stage...

After watching him, I was kind of disappointed with Umphrey's McGee.

  • Bob Weir Stumbles and Falls
I'm just back from Gathering of the Vibes and will recap that later, but before I left the Internet was a buzz with talk of Bob Weir being really off his game and totally spun on the first night of FURTHUR's 2 night NYC Nokia Theatre run which preceded their Friday night Vibes headlining spot. I was always a Team Bobby girl in my glory years of traipsing after the Grateful Dead, so it always pains me to hear the hate spewed in Bob's direction like this thread over on philzone.org: "Bob Weir just took an $80 shit in my mouth". Mostly I was concerned something was seriously wrong health wise with him.

Talk ranged from him being medically ill to being dosed, or drunk. Bobby had flubbed the lyrics to Truckin at Herkimer which I attended but was able to get right on track after smacking his head. But El Paso linked up below wasn't pretty. He starts the song over about 5 minutes in and they ended it shortly thereafter. The second night Phil either covering for Bobby or being truthful stated : "Never drink out of something you haven't poured yourself". Amen Brother, as a recovering alkie/garbage head I have to be hyper-vigilant myself.

Years ago I remember issues with spray bottles and people being dosed with liquid acid. MG aka Mountain Girl came out on stage and told everyone to basically keep their drugs to themselves. I forget her exact words now but she likened it to a violation akin to rape. I know friends who would have been grateful for the freebie but to force someone who hasn't every done a hallucinogen and who may or may not be able to handle it is just not right.

I've linked up a few posts Ive found on the subject:

Our friends over at Hidden Track.

    Northern Heads blog

And for those of you who can't fathom how he can forget lyrics after 40+ years and has a teleprompter to use. The teleprompter may not help Bobby all that much. Part of his early trouble during his school years is he suffered from undiagnosed dyslexia.

Regardless, he shook it off and was in fine form on Friday night at Vibes rocking his man-pris.
